Aøa cæ, da, Claire Fontaine m-a inspirat mult. NONCHALANCE An Interview with Lucie Fontaine by Marcel Janco scena Lucie Fontaine was born in 1982 in Colmar, where she currently lives. Her work has been seen in different places in Milan, New York, Murcia, Stockholm, Berlin and Rome. Her favorite visual artists are Sylvester Stallone, Martha Stewart and Puff Daddy. Marcel Janco ¬ For the last issue of IDEA I interviewed your sister Claire Fontaine. What is your relationship with her? How did you start making art? Were you inspired by her? Lucie Fontaine √ Well, I read that interview and liked it a lot. Especially when she said that curators, collectors and artists are somehow in increasingly similar positions. That’s how I see myself and that’s why I entitled myself just an “art employer“ who has “employees“. In this way I stay away from those categories and at the same time I embrace them all. Another important aspect is that an employer can only exist if she or he has employees – that Hegel tried to explain this with the master-slave trope – and I believe this is not so different from Claire’s relationship with her assistants, Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill. Also being an art employer means that the only way for me to exist is through labor, whether writing, creating or any other activity. So yes, Claire Fontaine inspired me a lot. My employees like to call me the Jamie Lynn Spears of contemporary art: “pregnant and in search of easy success“. ¬ I know you have a small collection and you have written about artists such as Lisi Raskin and Alessandro Roma. This said, if we consider the positions you can have in the field of art, it seems that the mediums you have used to express yourself so far have been that of creating art and presenting art in your space in Milan. Why have these tree branches grown more than the others and how do you see your work in comparison with Reena Spaulings, who is both an artist and a dealer? √ Speaking of botanic, I would prefer to use the metaphor of the rhizome instead of tree. If we make this shift, we realize that it doesn’t matter if one part of the rhizome is growing a lot and the other is not. They are all part of the same non-hierarchical structure, which is what differentiates the tree-trope from the rhizome-trope. Anyway, I hope my writings, my collection and my editorial projects will increase and actually I’m currently working on a book called The Talismans, which I hope will come out soon. Speaking of Reena Spaulings, of course, I see many connections and I respect her so much. But I also see a lot of differences. The most visible is the relationship between the works of art that Reena Spaulings makes and the works of art by the artists that Reena Spaulings shows in her space in New York. If you know about the artists she has shown – Seth Price, Josh Smith, Merlin Carpenter, Claire Fontaine, Josephne Pryde, Matias Faldbakken, Stephan Dillemuth and Lee Willlams – you MARCEL JANCO is raised in Malta. He is a curator and art critic based in Cluj and Turin. He is the co-founder of Sabot Gallery and the special correspondent of Archive Journal, a magazine based in Berlin. 59
