gini.
a istoriei noastre recente, a comunismului.
artæ cinematograficæ nu-i altceva decît istoria. Filmul lui Andrei Ujicæ surprinde
aceste lucruri, pentru cæ imaginile sale aratæ fiecæruia propria opticæ.
scena
duced the viewer to astronautics’ routine, where everything is under
control. But, at one time, it is not nature, but history which escapes
control, under the guise of the USSR collapse. But this episode,
although it includes representations of the street, with its demonstrators,
tanks and soldiers, is reflected in the film only in an indirect
and somewhat detached manner, from the distance that separates
a space station from the earth switchboard. And that’s just because
history is only the film’s frame: said directly, the subject is not the
world (be it cosmic or chaotic), but the connection between worlds,
the bond between the historical present and going out of the present.
On another level, the film is about building relationships between
man, medium and mechanism. The astronauts trying to contact,
from the roof of a hotel, the space station they would soon arrive at,
or the conversations in the cosmos with Mikhail Gorbachev or family
members, are some of the images that delineate the interpretation
of the film as a system of relationships. This idea is also confirmed
by the technique of rendering communication by breaking down
the signals to the last visual element: the image of the radar and the
transmission devices. If the ceaseless image permutations end up by
ruling out any historical reference point, towards the end of the work
the famous scene where Krikalev is asked what he thought about the
fact that the country he left doesn’t exist anymore, brings the history
issue back into consideration. That is, the issue of our recent history,
of communism. But in this film communism is nothing more than a
frequency, the frequency of contact; or, more precisely, the background
which will be revealed only in Andrei Ujicæ’s third filmic creation,
The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauøescu (2010). There are
some features that draw this film close to the previous ones, but also
features that differentiate them. Using archival images to make not
an historical documentary, but an entirely original work of art places
it, at a conceptual level, in the proximity of the other ones.
At the same time, although the film starts where the videograms
ended, he looks, literally, much further back. But not the temporal
duration makes the difference. It may be encountered at a formal
level, since The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauøescu explores the
material a little differently now, the film no longer being interested
in the forms of recursivity of the visible, but in the visible of the historical
form taken by the Romanian communism. This is also the
reason for the narrative form, as a visual biography of Ceauøescu.
The reason why the work centers on Nicolae Ceauøescu may have to
do with the very explicable obsession with freeing oneself from his
figure, but as minutes pass and scenery succeed, one starts to see
not so much a personal system, but a historical one. Romanian communism
crossed history, but also had its history. For his part,
Ceauøescu had his own history and its presentation meets the other
histories. Thus, not the dictator’s personality or his nature as a character
is the main theme of the work. What goes through the three
hours of cinematic art is nothing else than history as such. Andrei
Ujicæ’s film captures these things, because its images show each
their own outlook.
