Autorul Autobiografiei lui Nicolae Ceauøescu
Ovidiu fiichindeleanu
a tranzifliei postcomuniste.
Astfel, vestea bunæ a revolufliei televizate a devenit
spectralæ, concertatæ cætre România, a cærei singuræ încorporare materialæ era
cît o eternitate, a difuzærii filmului execufliei. A urmat øi difuzarea primei variante a
THE AUTHOR OF THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUØESCU
Ovidiu fiichindeleanu
In 2010, two decades after his traumatic disappearance, Nicolae
Ceauøescu officially returned to the Romanian public space, by a
double event: a first act to clarify the legal status, if not a clean restitution
of his earthly remains, that is, a transfer of his grave and bodily
remains, from the power of the state to his family care, and Andrei
Ujicæ’s film, The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauøescu. I say “officially”
because Ceauøescu did not cease to be a strong spectral presence
in the cultural history of the post-communist transition. Despite
or perhaps because the context of the dominant anti-communism,
Ceauøescu remained a constant reference, an unhealed obsession,
a dirty little secret, coming to surface in moments like Ion Iliescu’s
Freudian slip or in the eternally popular ritornello “life was better
under Ceauøescu”. The cause of this spectral state was not only
the “trauma of communism”, but a series of caesura that defined the
disappearance of the former head of state, while outlining the postcommunist
regime of truth: from that iconic, positive image of the
revolution (the helicopter taking off above the victorious popular
crowd) there was a gradual shift to a series of foggy, negative, traumatic
experiences. Thus, the good news of the broadcasted revolution
soon became a story of endless speeches, which fragmented
the positive meaning of the revolution, whatever it was; the frame
of the broadcasted revolution has changed already in the afternoon
of 22nd December 1989, from the enthusiastic popular crowd in
Studio 4 – another iconic positive image – to the solitary speakers
in Studio 5. 1 With nightfall, the history of the revolution became
dominated by the ghostly presence of the “terrorists” and by the
acknowledgement of the “outside” gaze of the West, a spectral gaze,
focused on Romania, whose only material embodiment was the very
“glass eye” of the TV set. This shift in the horizon of expectations
of the revolution was followed by the news about the capture and
execution of the couple (“... and his sinister wife”), endlessly repeated,
with the hyper-dramatic promise, stretched over two days which
seemed an eternity, of broadcasting the film of the execution.
Then the first version of the film was broadcasted, and so the French,
