an în urmæ, primul satelit artificial, Sputnik 1.
Astronoetica
nu era privitæ ca o alternativæ la astronauticæ: øi nu i se opunea, ci i se alætura;
day, at the Central Committee headquarters, a call is made to the
television to film the protesters, so that they can be seen, but at the
same time so they see themselves live, the specific of a revolution in
which media would ensure both its identity and legitimacy is starting
to shape. Since media representation was part of the revolutionary
process, the artist uses a special procedure in order to get the effect
of reality mirroring in the participatory consciousness: the image
of the image. Frequent scenes rendered in a mediated form of a
camera filming television screens that transmit the course of events
not only focus the gaze to where reality was built as a representation
of reality, but also to create the necessary detachment, so that reality
and its representation to reappear again as distinct. The artistic
method is carried on in Andrei Ujicæ’s second work, Out of the Present
(1999).
In 1958, Wolfgang Bargmann, a renowned German surgeon and professor,
urged his colleagues at the University of Kiel to respond, each
according to his power and profession, to the challenge of the Soviet
Union, who had the audacity to launch, just a year ago, the first artificial
satellite, Sputnik 1. The German scientist called up to a collective
scientific mobilization of the West in order to catch up the Soviets.
In these circumstances, Hans Blumenberg made a research proposal
seeking funding for strictly theoretical investigations on the yet dark
side of the moon, and the results intended to be published in a new
professional journal, Current Topics on Astronoetics. There occurred
the name of a discipline considered by Blumenberg as a supplement
and complement for astronautics. Astronoetics was not seen as an
alternative to astronautics: and it did not oppose the latter, but
joined it; it did not precede the latter, but followed it. It didn’t mean
thinking instead of traveling, but thinking the sense of traveling.
Astronoetics is therefore not an expression of science-fiction literature
or speculative philosophy; although an autonomous science,
it can accommodate several areas – among other things, art and
film. If I had to name one work that meets the definition of astronoetics,
the only one I know is the film about the oscillations between
the earth and the cosmos of Anatoli Artsebarski, Sergei Krikalev and
other astronauts. Andrei Ujicæ’s brightest film, Out of the Present,
recovers, artistically impeccable, perhaps the most impressive
footage ever captured from space: and I’m thinking at the recording
of that failed experiment to send a space cargo to earth from the
Mir orbital station; or at the images of astronauts going out in space,
outside the station. But it is not the poetic strangeness that gives
these images – and others – their extraordinary force of suggestion;
as in all Ujicæ’s films, it is the artistic diascopy. In one of the first
lines, an operator transmits repeatedly for those outside the earth:
“The camera must be turned on!” The cameras are turned on and
the images start moving on different orbits. Just like in Videograms
of a Revolution, the cameras placed in numberless positions, the
cameras always filming footage, wrap the images in ever new and
new images. Gradually, it’s revealed the film’s intention; or its astronoetics.
Images in the film revolve around history, both common and
uncommon. The press conferences before the flight, current activities
on the space station, astronauts’ returns and recoveries intro
