Tæieturi prin istorie. Filmul lui Andrei Ujicæ
Andrei State
dimensiunea artisticæ, datoratæ unei dispuneri specifice a imaginilor, revenea
ordonate a oricæror secvenfle.
Andrei State
scena
In 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière, the inventors of a technical
device that they called cinématographe, have made their first films,
each lasting about one minute. The first one, Workers Leaving the
Lumière Factory, shows the end of the working program in a factory
in Lyon, rendering, without any prior script, a brief period in the
daily life of the workers. The second one, Arrival of a Train at a Station,
projected in a café in Paris several months later, also captures
an ordinary aspect, the entering of a passenger train into a station
and the accompanying excitement. Since then, these films have
been considered the birth of a new technology, but also a new art.
While the technology offered the possibility of storing the moving
images and their visual representation in a temporal sequence, the
artistic dimension, due to a specific arrangement of the images, was
related to the act of mediating, for the viewers, the access to a sense,
other than the mere transmission of any ordered sequences. If the
transformations of the cameras and projection devices followed the
predetermined path of development and technical improvement,
the issue of the meaning of the filmic representations cannot be classified,
in retrospect, into a predictable pattern. Referring only to the
films mentioned, one viewing is enough to grasp the obvious fact
that Lumière brothers wanted to test a technology, not to produce
works of art. In both, the crowd of people only enters into view in
order for the future audience to try, as real as possible, the sensation
of movement. Taken in front of their own company, the first film
images were captured because the view was at hand. The steam
locomotive in the second film is present there for the same reason,
for the effect: it was assumed, not without justification, that it will
leave the public an indelible impression. Therefore, in these examples,
the perceivableness is targeted, and understanding this in
terms of artistic intent tends to be unnecessary; or misleading.
However, while watching, one cannot help wondering about the
characters, the narration, the exposition; when reflected outside,
any sequence of images calls for the start of an interpretation.
For the receptors, the series of images is a set of meanings imprinted
ANDREI STATE (b. 1979) studied philosophy in Cluj, and obtained the
Ph.D. at Babeø-Bolyai University with a thesis concerning the theologicalpolitical
foundations of modernity in the 16th–17th centuries (2009).
Between 2006 and 2008 he was an editor for IDEA arts + society magazine,
and since 2008 coordinates a series on the philosophy of history for
Tact Publishing House. His research interests include history and theory
of modernity, and theory and practice of contemporary arts.
