Imperiul semnelor
Hanna Alkema
Société Réaliste: Empire, State, Building, Jeu de Paume, 1 martie – 8 mai 2011
politice, economice ori sociale.
asupra lumii contemporane øi a reprezentærilor sale.
film, cartografii, grafice, fotografii pe casete luminoase, sculpturi, drapele, plæci emailate...
Cult of She-manity [Cultul fe-manitæflii] (2011), asociatæ calendarului lui Auguste Comte.
O zi corespunde uneori
EMPIRE OF SIGNS
Hanna Alkema
Société Réaliste: Empire, State, Building, Jeu de Paume,
1 March – 8 May 2011
scena
Empire, State, Building, at Jeu de Paume, is the first exhibition, in
a Parisian institution of such a stature, of the young artistic cooperative
Société Réaliste, founded at Paris, in 2004, by Ferenc Gróf and
Jean-Baptiste Naudy. From the beginning of their collaboration, the
French-Hungarian duet develops projects dealing with the production
of forms. They question the power of visual signs produced
amidst the world of art, but also of the political, economical, or social
sphere. Their researches are conducted upon the discourses underlying
these images and their formal and symbolical construction.
Yet it is not the question of semeiology here, nor of the historiography
of the history of forms. Their approach evolves in a speculative
manner by the agency of the structures of their invention.
The cooperative thus created no fewer than about ten fictious entities
which mimic structures of power, of organization, and of control.
Among these we can rank the design agency and, at the same time,
cabinet of tendencies Transitioners, The Ministry of Architecture,
charged with the study of space politics, the EU Green Card Lottery
agency, which proposes a new protocol for dealing with European
immigration. Each of these organizations shelters the frequently
deliberately absurd or cynical developments of their reflection, which
take the form of objects, installations, exhibitions, texts and conferences,
and form as many critical apparatuses pointing to the deconstruction
of the observation directed towards the contemporary world
and its representations.
Jeu de Paume, directed by Marta Gili, equally curator of this exhibition,
is a place dedicated specially to the image, a problematic crossing
the inconsistent corpus of new productions and older works
presented by the artistic cooperative. The functional dimension and
the habitual segmentation of their work somehow fade away here
in the benefit of a multitude of works belonging to their various
“organizations“, which lays open the network woven between each
of their projects. The exhibition space is transformed into an authentic
cabinet of curiosities gathering together a varied panel of mediums,
painting, film, cartographies, graphics, photographies on
lightboxes, sculptures, flags, varnished plates... The ensemble
bounds through a pregnant bichromatic hue, declined from black to
white, starting with the walls painted in black. This restricted prism
is not without connection to the ink of typographic fonts, a fundamental
tool of their work, yet it evokes mostly a nocturnal sky.
The exhibition articulates in fact around a map of the sky, Cult of
She-manity (2011), related to the calendar of Auguste Comte.
Founder of the positivism and apostle of a new religion, he founds
at the end of his life The Church of Humanity. This cult is reclaimed
by the Brasilian positivists who will proclaim the Republic of Brasil on
November 15, 1889, and adorn their flag with the starred sky of this
founding night. Continuing this cosmogonic motif, Société Réaliste
superposes over Auguste Comte’s calendar another important night:
