In Azerbaijan gender studies have appeared over the last decades. Political
realities of our country have induced the introduction of gender researches into
educational system of Azerbaijan in order to increase the political consciousness
and culture of the society.
Owing to its geopolitical location and natural resources Azerbaijan has
always undergone pressure from the side of the stronger states. For this reason
gender researches in Azerbaijan have assumed the character of general
conclusions at national, racial, and culturological level. Gender researchers in
Azerbaijan consider the experience of the western countries in this field taking
into account the fact that gender is not just a struggle for women rights, but a
struggle for a harmonious, integral society where universal values are synthesized.
Obviously the activities on the development of gender researches could not be
purely academic one. In order to achieve tangible results it was necessary to
develop a special strategy consolidating research, educational, institutional and
public activities.
It is necessary to notice that historical events have left the trace in the
culture of the Azerbaijan people having developed a number of steady stereotypes
which were interpreted in spiritual, social, political and economic life of the
society. The development of gender relations in Azerbaijan is characterized by
variants of social and cultural roles of men and women in the society. They are
defined by the dynamics of historical events and cultural impacts on Azerbaijan.
Gender researches are of particular importance for Azerbaijan since considerable
changes took place in the Republic during the last 15 years. Newly acquired
independence, changes of socio-political system resulted in transformation of
social structure of the society and the system of values.
The Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev contributed considerably to the
establishment of the gender policy in Azerbaijan. It is important to notice, that
since the very first years of his activity, Heydar Aliyev who was promoted to the
political leadership in Azerbaijan in late 60s of the 20th century and worked in
various state positions, took care of freedom of Azerbaijani women, their
economic, political, social, cultural promotion. As a result of this activity, 800,000
women or 45% of workforce in 70s were represented in the public production. We
must pinpoint the fact that women constituted 43% of scientific sphere. While
there almost were no doctor women in first decades of the last century, women
representation in medicine reached 62% during Heydar Aliyev`s years in power.
The Azerbaijan government included international women`s day in all documents
in order to ensure legal equality of women around the world, their social-cultural
progress, guarantee friendship among peoples around the world. Creation of the
