10.6.2 Assistance during Delivery
Obstetric care from a trained provider during delivery is critical for the reduction of maternal
and neonatal mortality. Home deliveries are usually less likely to be assisted by a health professional,
whereas health facility deliveries are more likely to be assisted by a trained health professional.
Table 10.7 shows the distribution of live births in the five years preceding the survey by the
person assisting during delivery. Thirty percent of births are delivered by a skilled provider (doctor,
nurse, assistant nurse, or midwife), with a nurse or midwife being the most common skilled provider.
Three percent of deliveries are performed by a doctor, and less than 1 percent are performed by an
assistant nurse. Nearly one-fifth of deliveries are carried out by traditional birth attendants (18
percent). Women receive assistance from a relative or some other person for nearly one in two births
(49 percent), while 3 percent of births take place without any type of assistance at all.
