12.12 PREVALENCE OF ANEMIA IN WOMEN
The most common cause of anemia in developing countries is inadequate intake of iron,
folate, vitamin B12, or other nutrients. Anemia can also result from sickle cell disease, malaria, and
intestinal worm infestation. Anemia may be the underlying cause of maternal mortality, spontaneous
abortion, premature birth, and low birth weight. Iron and folic acid supplementation and deworming
among pregnant women are important measures for reducing anemia prevalence among vulnerable
groups of women. Anemia is characterized by a low level of hemoglobin in the blood. The 2009-10
TLDHS measured hemoglobin levels to identify anemia in women.
