3.2 EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT AND LITERACY
Tables 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 show the distribution of respondents by educational attainment,
according to background characteristics. Twenty-nine percent of women age 15-49 have never been to
school, 14 percent have some primary education, 9 percent have completed primary education, 29
percent have some secondary education, and 19 percent have completed secondary or a higher level of
education. Older women and those who reside in rural areas are most likely to have no education. The
urban-rural difference in the level of education is pronounced among those who have completed
secondary or higher levels of schooling. For example, women in urban areas are more than three times
as likely as those in rural areas to have completed secondary education or a higher level of education
(39 percent and 12 percent, respectively).
