14.8.2 Age at First Sex and Condom Use at First Sexual Intercourse
Information from the 2009-10 TLDHS can be used to examine several important issues
relating to the initiation of sexual activity among youth, including age at first sex and condom use at
first sexual intercourse.
Table 14.12 shows the proportions of women and men in the 15-24 age cohort who had sex
before age 15 and before age 18. Two percent of young women and less than one percent of young
men had sex by age 15, while 15 percent of young women and 10 percent of young men had sex by
age 18. The female-male difference in the age at first sexual debut is primarily due to the earlier age at
marriage of women.
