3.4.1 Employment Status<br />

The <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong> TLDHS asked respondents a number <strong>of</strong> questions regarding their employment<br />

status, including whether they were working in the seven days preceding the survey <strong>and</strong>, if not,<br />

whether they had worked in the 12 months before the survey. The results for women <strong>and</strong> men are<br />

presented in Tables 3.5.1 <strong>and</strong> 3.5.2. At the time <strong>of</strong> the survey, about two-fifths <strong>of</strong> women were<br />

currently employed, <strong>and</strong> less than one percent was not employed but had worked sometime during the<br />

past 12 months.<br />

The proportion <strong>of</strong> women currently employed increases with age. Current employment is<br />

lowest among women age 15-19 (23 percent) <strong>and</strong> highest among those age 45-49 (58 percent).<br />

Women who are divorced, separated, or widowed are more likely to be currently employed than other<br />

women. Women who have three or more children are more likely to be currently employed than those<br />

with two or fewer children. Less than one-third <strong>of</strong> women in urban areas were currently working<br />

compared with two-fifths <strong>of</strong> women in rural areas. The higher rural rate <strong>of</strong> employment reflects the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> farm work <strong>and</strong> perhaps a shortage <strong>of</strong> income, but the distinction between paid <strong>and</strong>
