12.7 ANEMIA IN CHILDREN<br />
Anemia is a condition characterized by a reduction in the red blood cell volume <strong>and</strong> a<br />
decrease in the concentration <strong>of</strong> hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is necessary for transporting<br />
oxygen to tissues <strong>and</strong> organs in the body. About half <strong>of</strong> the global burden <strong>of</strong> anemia is due to iron<br />
deficiency. Iron deficiency, in turn, is largely due to an inadequate dietary intake <strong>of</strong> bioavailable iron,<br />
increased iron requirements during rapid growth periods (such as pregnancy <strong>and</strong> infancy), <strong>and</strong><br />
increased blood loss due to hookworm infestation. Nutritional anemia includes the anemia burden due<br />
to deficiency in iron plus deficiencies in folate, vitamins B <strong>and</strong> B12, <strong>and</strong> certain trace elements<br />
