More than ninety-six percent of Timorese women reported that they have at least one problem
when they access health care for themselves. The two major concerns were no availability of drugs
(87 percent) and no availability of a health care provider (82 percent). Concern about not having a
female provider is also sizeable (63 percent). Women had about equal concern regarding the distance
to the health facility and having to take transport (more than one in two women). Getting permission
to go for treatment was the least of women’s worries (23 percent). Two in five considered not wanting
to go alone to be a problem. In general, women with more than secondary education and women in
the highest wealth quintile were least likely to report having a serious problem in accessing health
facilities.
