serious problem for pregnant women, leading to premature delivery <strong>and</strong> low birth weight 3 .<br />

The <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong> TLDHS included anemia testing <strong>of</strong> children age 6-59 months <strong>and</strong> women age<br />

15-49 in every third household selected for the <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong> TLDHS sample. Anemia levels were<br />

determined by measuring the level <strong>of</strong> hemoglobin in the blood, with a decreased concentration<br />

characterizing anemia. For hemoglobin measurements, a drop <strong>of</strong> capillary blood was taken with a<br />

finger prick (using sterile, disposable instruments). Hemoglobin concentration was measured using<br />

the HemoCue photometer system.<br />
