Among those who have heard of AIDS, twice as many women as men (55 percent and 26
percent, respectively) state that they would be willing to care for a family member with AIDS in their
home. Eighty-four percent of women and 87 percent of men say that they would not want to keep
secret that a family member was infected with HIV, while 44 percent of women and 28 percent of
men say that an HIV-positive female teacher should be allowed to continue teaching. A relatively
lower proportion of women and men (34 percent and 22 percent, respectively) say they would buy
fresh vegetables from a shopkeeper with AIDS. The percentage expressing accepting attitudes on all
four measures is low: 11 percent among women and 3 percent among men.
