Funk ArieFunk LajosBorn in Csökmő in 1920Perished in Auschwitz in 1944Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Arie became a member of the movement at the beginning of 1940 and in1941 he joined the Sela Organization within whose framework he went toa hahshara. After the hahshara was closed, he worked in construction.Arie gave assistance to refugees arriving in Hungary from Slovakia andPoland. After Simha Hunwald, one of the movement’s leaders, wascaught with other comrades at the end of February 1942, Arie was alsosent to a detention camp in Garany. He managed to get released andtogether with his friend, Judith Scharf (Hartman), he was added to thetiyul to Romania. Both of them were caught on the train. Judith wasincarcerated in the Mosonyi prison in Budapest and from there deportedto Auschwitz. Arie was taken to the town of Szolnok where the local Jewsand Jews from nearby small towns were concentrated and among themhis family members. In Szolnok Arie was humiliated and tortured in publicand sent with all the Jews to Auschwitz.Füredi AvriFüredi István ‘Fábri’Born in Nyíregyháza in 1922Fell in battle on 27.3.1948 in IsraelMember of “Hashomer Hatzair”Avri was an only child. His father was a lawyer and the family waslearned and assimilated. Avri was a member of “Hashomer Hatzair” from1939. He moved to Budapest in 1941. Within the framework of themovement Avri was a member of the “Hebrew Circle” whose members’ambition was to speak Hebrew only. He was a highly cultivated man andpossessed leadership skills. He excelled in the field of music as well. In1942 with the arrival of refugees from Slovakia, Avri was among the firstto engage in helping them. He was caught with three comrades and sentto the Garany detention camp. Eventually there were fifteen “HashomerHatzair” activists in this camp.Avri made aliya in 1946 and was a member of the “Ehad BeMay” garinwithin whose framework he stayed in Kibbutz Ma’anit and KibbutzYassur. During the War of Independence he enlisted in the Hagana. Hewas sent to escort convoys in the North and to bring the illegal<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 100
