Dr. Galor EliyahuDr. Gellért EndreBorn in Budapest in 1917Died in 1997 in IsraelMember of “Hatzionim Haclali'im” and “Maccabea”Eliyahu studied at the Jewish high school and in the department ofhumanities at university. He received his teaching diploma in 1939 inBudapest. As early as 1934 he joined the “Maccabea” movement andwas an active member. Before the German occupation on 19.3.1944,Eliyahu helped refugees from Poland and Slovakia find refuge. After theGerman invasion, he worked from the “Glass House”. He engaged inpreparing lists of Jews and Protection Documents and taking them totheir destination, mainly to the Yellow Star houses. In addition, Eliyahusupplied food to the Jews in the ghetto and often visited themendangering his own life. He took people out of the ghetto while posingas a representative of the Swiss Embassy. After the liberation Eliyahuwas the manager of the Education Department of the Jewish Communityin Budapest and made sure that a Zionist spirit and the Hebrew languagewere taught in the Jewish institutions.Between 1950 and 1955 he was an official in the Israeli legation inBudapest.Eliyahu made aliya in 1955, was a teacher, a publicist and did publicwork.Gárdos JohananGárdos GyulaBorn in Kecskemét in 1920Died on 11.5.2007 in IsraelMember of “Hashomer Hatzair”Johanan’s family was traditional and liberal leaning towards socialism.His father was a follower of Béla Kun and in 1919 carried out acommunist regime that was crushed. His father was arrested and did timein prison.In 1924, after his father was released from prison, the family moved toBratislava. At the age of fifteen Johanan joined the movement.From 1939 to 1941 he was a member of the central leadership of themovement and spent some time in a hahshara. With the beginning of thedeportations from Slovakia he went underground.In 1942 Johanan moved to Hungary and took part in the undergroundactivities. At this time he met Lea, his future wife.In 1943 he succeeded in making aliya in a legal way escorting a group ofadolescents who had received the authorization to leave Hungary.Johanan joined Kibbutz Ha’ogen and has been a member ever since.<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 103
