Steuer ÁgnesArnstein LajlaBorn in Nyiregyháza on 19.6.1927Member of “Dror Habonim”Ágnes was the daughter of a wealthy modern orthodox Jewish family inBudapest. She studied at the Jewish high school and joined “DrorHabonim”. In the underground Ágnes dealt with finding accommodationfor the refugees from Poland and Slovakia. She operated under the nameof Horváth Éva and obtained from the Population Registry authentic birthcertificates that were then modified to match the data of the people whoneeded them. A local detective suspected her of being Jewish and shewas arrested but managed to escape. Ágnes resumed her undergroundactivities on 52 Baross Street and in the offices of the International RedCross.She travelled to the Slovakian border carrying in her bag 36 SwissProtection Documents that she gave to young men serving in a forcedlabor camp among whom was her future husband, Miki. She learned howto use a weapon from Vili Eisikovics. Ágnes was caught by Arrow Crossmen, taken for interrogation but again she managed to escape. After theliberation in 1945 she engaged in locating Jewish children andyoungsters and sending them to Eretz Israel (Palestine). Ágnes herselftried to leave Hungary for her aliya in 1949 but was caught. She wasdetained for six months. Again she tried to cross the border with herhusband Miki and this time she succeeded. She made aliya in 1952.Stevens E. <strong>And</strong>rewSteinberger EndreBorn in Budapest on 5.3.1928Independent , did not belong to any movement<strong>And</strong>rew studied at the Jewish elementary school on Wesselényi Street,the high school on Dob Street and at a teachers’ seminary next to theRabbinical Seminary for one year. After the Germans invaded Hungaryon 19.3.1944, he was enlisted in a forced labor unit and worked in thebuilding of a railway near Zirc and in removing debris in Budapest. Twodays after the Arrow Cross rose to power (15.10.1944), he escaped. Heequipped himself with forged documents by the name of Sólyom Endrethat he received from one of his comrades. He engaged in the forgery ofdocuments and posed as an injured soldier returning from the Russian<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 232
