In the winter of 1944-1945 she was caught again by Arrow Cross menwhile on her way to distribute forged documents but again succeeded toescape.After Szálasi came to power on 15.10.1944, Esther stayed at the “GlassHouse” on Vadász Street, which was under Swiss protection. She servedas a Swiss messenger and distributed forged documents to Jews aroundthe city. Again she was caught with a bag full of forged documents butmanaged to escape. Later, due to a Hungarian informer who knew herbefore the war, Esther was arrested and taken to the districtheadquarters of Arrow Cross on 2, Szent István körút (Saint IshtvanBoulevard) but managed to run away because that very same night therewas heavy bombing and the emergency exit was left open.In 1949 Esther made aliya and served in the IDF as an officer.She founded a family and studied economics both in Israel and abroad.She was a consultant in economics for several ministers in Israeligovernments.She resided in Mevaseret Tzion.Alpan Moshe (Pil)Elefánt MártonBorn in Lazony (Lozin) Bazin (Pezinok) in 1918Died on 30.1.2006 in IsraelMember of “Hashomer Hatzair”Pil was one of the most prominent figures in the Hungarian Zionist youthmovements underground. His parents, Marcus Elefánt and ReismanFrieda, lived in Várna (Varin) and in Bazin (Pezinok) in Slovakia. Hisparents, his older sister, Rozy, and her husband, were deported toAuschwitz. His parents died but his sister survived. His two youngersisters, Ella and Shoshana, were active in the Hungarian underground. In1936 Moshe graduated from the Jewish high school in Munkács. Until1939 he studied Law and Philosophy at the University of Prague. Hejoined the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement and worked in education andorganization. Moshe also trained members for aliya in the framework ofthe hahsharot. He served in a forced labor unit and in 1941 became ateacher for Jewish children who were not allowed to study in Slovakschools. In 1942, when the deportation of Slovakian Jews started, Moshewent underground, obtained forged documents and, as a member of thecentral committee of the movement, organized illegal activities. Since hespoke Hungarian fluently, on January 19 th , 1944, the movement decidedto send him to Budapest where he joined the underground activities. Atthe beginning Moshe used the fictitious name of Michael Solsky, a Polishrefugee, and later he operated under the names of János Szabó andMihály Rajec. He mainly dealt with providing assistance to refugees from<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 35
