Hewas active in the hahsharot and was among the organizers of themovement’s 1943 winter camp in Balatonboglár. Simon distributed forgeddocuments and taught the youngsters how to work in underground andself-defense conditions. He also took part in the smuggling of Jews fromSlovakia into Hungary via Losonc (Luenec). Simon escorted thefugitives from Hungary to Romania within the framework of the tiyul.During one of his trips towards the town of Nagyvárad (Oradea), he wascaught together with his friend Hanna Cohen. They were both taken toAuschwitz where they perished.Levi Yehuda 'Pici'Löwi LajosBorn in Kolozsvár (Cluj) on 5.3.1925Died on 27.9.2000 in IsraelMember of “Hanoar Hatzioni”After the Germans invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, with the help of hismovement, Yehuda arrived in Budapest equipped with forged Christianpapers. He joined the underground activities and engaged in obtainingand distributing forged documents. From June 1944 Yehuda oftenescorted Jews on trains to Nagyvárad in the framework of the tiyul.Yehuda himself sometimes crossed the border in order to put thesmuggled Jews into safe hands. On one of these occasions, on a streetin Nagyvárad, he shot a policeman who was about to arrest Jews butmanaged to escape.Yehuda entered the ghettos in order to take out Jews and save themfrom deportation to Auschwitz. He was caught by the Germans and aswastika cross was burnt into his chest with white-hot iron. In a criticalcondition Yehuda was saved by the Red Army.In 1947 he made aliya. He lived on a kibbutz for some years. Yehudaworked as an educational instructor in Alonei Yitzhak and was themanager of a technology school in Sarafend.
