Schechter <strong>David</strong>Born in Técső (Tyacsiv) in 1924Killed in 1944Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<strong>David</strong> studied at a yeshiva and learned carpentry. He was among thefounders and activists of the “Hashomer Hatzair” ken in his hometown. InApril 1944 he was enlisted in a forced labor unit. In July 1944 his sister,Tzippi, was sent to him and brought him and his friends forgeddocuments, money as well as instructions for escape. In August <strong>David</strong>arrived in Budapest and joined the underground. He crossed the borderinto Romania within the framework of the tiyul. When he passed throughthe city of Arad, on his way to Bucharest, the train was attacked byGerman planes. <strong>David</strong> was hit and died. The attack was the result ofRomania’s decision to break its alliance with Germany. <strong>David</strong> was buriedin the Jewish cemetery in Arad.Prof. Scheffer JosephSchaeffer JózsefBorn in Budapest on 5.5.1922Died in 1984 in IsraelMember of “Maccabi Hatzair”Joseph was a member of the movement’s leadership. In 1942 he dealtwith the absorption of refugees, members of “Maccabi Hatzair” fromSlovakia and equipped them with documents and money. Due to hisactivities Joseph was arrested and sent to the Garany detention camp.After about eleven months he was transferred to a forced labor camp. On15.10.1944 Jopseph escaped, arrived in Budapest and joined theunderground activities. After the fascist Arrow Cross Party rose to poweron 15.10.1944, he worked with Ottó Komoly in Department A within theframework of the International Red Cross and dealt mainly with theorganization of children’s houses. After the liberation Joseph made aliyaand joined Kibbutz Kfar Hahoresh. He held a number of central positionsin his kibbutz. Joseph completed his doctorate in sociology. He was oneof the prominent figures of the “Institute for Kibbutz Research”.
