Dr. Roth StephenDr. Roth Sigfried ZsigmondBorn in Gyöngyös in 1915Died in 1995 in EnglandMember of “Hanoar Hatzioni”In 1938 Stephen received his doctorate in law. From 1941 he was activein giving assistance especially to refugees from Poland. From 1942 hewas the representative of “Hatzionim Haclali’im” at the Relief and <strong>Rescue</strong>Committee. After 19.3.1944, he became the leader of “Hanoar Hatzioni”.Stephen was among the organizers of the tiyul and, as a result, wasarrested, incarcerated in the prison on Fø Street and later in the Kistarcsadetention camp. He was liberated thanks to Ottó Komoly, the president ofthe Hugarian Zionist Association. After the Arrow Cross Party rose topower on 15.10.1944 Stephen was active in the branches of the Swissconsulate on Wekerle and Vadász Streets. After the liberation he was themanager of the information center on the persecution of Jews in Hungaryon behalf of the World Jewish Congress. Stephen arrived in London andworked with Dr. Nahum Goldman. <strong>For</strong> four years he was the president ofthe British Zionist Organization.Roth YitzhakRoth IzsákBorn in Nyitra (Nitra) on 26.12.1915Died on 12.3.1994 in IsraelMember of “Bnei Akiva”Yitzhak studied in a yeshiva. He joined “Tze’irei Hamizrahi” and the “BneiAkiva” movement. In 1939 he was elected to the national leadership of“Bnei Akiva” and engaged in the establishment of new kenim of themovement in Slovakia. In 1942, after the proclamation of an independentSlovakia, Yitzhak served in the Sered labor camp. In 1943 he fled toBudapest and joined comrades of the movement working for theunderground. Yitzhak worked in the Eretz-Israel Office in Budapest in theYouth Department and organized aliya to Eretz Israel (Palestine). Hehelped rescue his comrades who had remained in Slovakia. Yitzhakparticipated in the proceedings of the Eretz Israel Office managed byMoshe Krausz.In 1944 Yitzhak left Hungary with a certificate and was on his way toEretz Israel (Palestine). He was delayed in Ankara and took part in thedeliberations of the Relief and <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee that was working forthe recruitment of European Jews for the rescue of the remainingrefugees.<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 207
