Vardi EstherSechter EditBorn in Técső (Tyacsiv) in 1922Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Esther came from a Jewish ultra-orthodox family. In 1942 she joined themovement and in March 1944 arrived in Budapest. After the Germaninvasion of Hungary, Esther went underground and, thanks to her Aryanappearance, she ran errands, obtained authentic documents fromgovernment offices and distributed them. She was sent to Kisvárdacarrying a bag of forged documents and money for the Jews in the ghettoso that they could escape. Esther was arrested by Hungarian gendarmesbut, when she went to the toilet, she managed to conceal the forgeddocuments. After a few days of interrogation, when she did not revealanything about her mission, but admitted to being Jewish, she was sentto prison in Budapest and within three weeks was deported to Auschwitzand Bergen-Belsen. Esther was liberated on 19.4.1945. She returned toBudapest and in July she was on her way to Eretz Israel (Palestine). Shestayed in camps in Cyprus and Atlit.Esther is a member of Kibbutz Ha’ogen.Vardi RahelFlohr GabriellaBorn in the village of Olaszliszka , Hungary in 1923Member of “Maccabi Hatzair”Rahel arrived in Budapest in 1941 and joined a hahshara. In 1942 shesmuggled comrades from Slovakia into Hungary. Her roles were to finddwellings, food and forged documents as well as to move refugees tohiding places. After the German occupation of Hungary and the beginningof deportations, Rahel traveled with her sister to her village from whereshe was deported to Auschwitz.After the liberation she stayed in Sweden in order to recover her health.Rahel made aliya in 1948 and joined Kibbutz Kfar Hahoresh where she isstill a member. She held various positions in the kibbutz and in themovement.<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 243
