Knapp MenahemKnapp BélaBorn in Érsekújvár (Nové Zámky) on 2.7.1924Died on 14.4.2009 in IsraelMember of “Hashomer Hatzair”Menahem came from a religious Jewish family, studied at high schooland in a yeshiva. In April 1944, about a month after the Germans invadedHungary, he was enlisted in a forced labor camp where Anti Livni andYitzhak Steiner were also serving. Menahem received forged documentsfrom “Hashomer Hatzair” members so that he could escape when readyto. On his way from the forced labor camp to another one he got on atramway with forged documents in his pocket. On the tram he wasrecognized by a man from his hometown who was wearing the fascistArrow Cross party uniform and wanted to arrest him. Menahem managedto jump off the tramway and escape. He arrived in the “Glass House” on29, Vadász Street and from there he was sent on various missions todistribute forged documents, obtain food and clothes. Many times he wasabout to be caught but thanks to his presence of mind and luck he alwaysmanaged to avoid being arrested and continued his activities. AHungarian officer from his former forced labor unit arrived in the “GlassHouse” and gave him Swiss Protection Documents for the whole unitthanks to which all the men were taken back to Budapest from theGerman border.Menahem is a member of Kibbutz Yassur.Kohavi SarahMiklós ZsuzsaBorn in Debrecen on 7.1.1922Died on 24.12.1998 in IsraelMember of “Hanoar Hatzioni”In 1941 and 1942 Sarah was a member of the leadership of the outlawedken in Debrecen. In January 1942 she went to a hahshara in Budapest.Sarah helped with the absorption of refugees from Poland who weremembers of the movement. After the Germans entered Hungary on19.3.1944, she became an underground activist. She obtained authenticAryan documents and distributed them. Sarah traveled to many places todistribute documents and she tried to convince friends to escape from theforced labor camps and the ghettos. She found apartments for thefugitives and was active in the tiyul to Romania. Sarah herself made aliya<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 153
