The Belz Rabbi, AharonRokah, and his assistants, were smuggled out of the ghetto near Cracovin Poland and, at the end of 1943, to Hungary by Hungarian officers.Moshe Shapira, head of the aliya department in the Jewish Agency (andthe representative of "Mizrahi") in Jerusalem ordered Moshe Krausz,head of the Eretz-Israel Office in Budapest, to add the Belz Rabbi and hisassistants to the list of olim as part of the quota for ‘senior Zionists’. <strong>And</strong>indeed the rabbi left Hungary on 18.1.1944 with a legal group of olim witha certificate in place of Yonatan Zvulon Sternberg and his family whowere at the top of the list of senior Zionists. In June 1944 Yonatan leftHungary on the train of the Relief and <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee but died uponhis arrival in Switzerland.Sternberg Margit GitlBorn in 1888Died in 1975 in IsraelMember of "Mizrahi"Margit was active in the movement from 1908 and was among thefounders of the "Mizrahi" women in Hungary. In 1923 and 1939 shevisited Eretz Israel (Palestine) in order to prepare her family’s aliya butthe war put an end to the plans. Margit took part in the activities of herhusband, Yonatan Zvulon Sternberg. She left Hungary on the train of theRelief and <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee.
