In 1953 Pál was tried again andthis time condemned to ten years in prison on charges of being a traitorto the homeland. In 1957 he was exonerated from treason and in 1989also from being an informer. In 1990, after the change of the regime,Demény Pál was a representative of the Socialist Party in the HungarianParliament. He died in the conference room of the Parliament.Deutsch RahelTornay ÁgnesBorn in Nyiregyháza on 12.1.1924Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Rahel joined the movement where she met her future husband, Ya'akovDeutsch.In 1942 she moved to Budapest with Ya'akov and gave assistance to theJewish refugees who arrived from Slovakia to Hungary. Because of hermother’s illness Rahel returned to her hometown and passed on all theinformation she had about the extermination of Jews in the countriesoccupied by the Germans. Most Jews did not want to believe her andonly some of the youngsters were willing to assume a borrowed identity.Rahel returned to Budapest and, after some time, she found refuge onthe estate of Christian acquaintances.At the end of June 1944 Rahel and Ya'akov left Budapest on the train ofthe Relief and <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee and arrived in Switzerland. He joined the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement. He excelled invarious sports. Ya'akov met his future wife, Rahel (Tornay Ágnes) at anearly age. When he was fifteen, his father died.In 1942 Ya'akov moved to Budapest with Rahel and joined his comradesin the movement there. Ya'akov gave assistance to the Jewish refugeeswho at the time were arriving from Slovakia to Hungary. He gave one ofthe refugees his own documents and when he returned to Nyiregyháza toget new ones, he was arrested and taken to prison in Budapest.
