Paul ErnstPál Ernő ‘Jancsi’Born in Beregújfalu (Beregujfalu) on 14.1.1928Member of “Dror Habonim”Ernst arrived in Budapest in 1941 and, that same year, he joined themovement in the Újpest suburb of the capital. In 1943 he met NeshkaGoldfarb and later, Tzvi Goldfarb, Vili Eisikovics and other comrades.Under a false name and with forged documents he started working for theunderground. He went on missions to the forced labor camps in order tosmuggle comrades into Budapest. He walked around the city wearing theuniform of a lieutenant of the pre-army “Levente” and, according to a listhe had, Ernst took Jews out of the ghetto. Riding a motorcycle hemaintained contact with the bunkers and supplied food and equipment forthem. Ernst was arrested by fascist Arrow Cross men and taken to theirheadquarters on 60, <strong>And</strong>rássy Street. Afterwards he was taken for furtherinterrogation to the Gestapo headquarters in Buda. When he was beingtaken with a group of Jews to the banks of the Danube where the fascistsintended to shoot them, Ernst succeeded to escape and arrive in one ofthe bunkers in Buda. However, he found out that the bunker had alreadybeen discovered by the Hungarian police. In a park in the vicinity of theEastern Railway Station he met with Vili Eisikovics who led him to anearby different bunker of the movement. Two days later that bunker toowas discovered and its occupants were taken to the prison on MargitBoulevard. He underwent cruel interrogation and eventually was liberatedby a daring operation of the underground Zionist Youth Movement andtaken to one of the Protected Houses where he was liberated by the RedArmy.Ernst made aliya. When he was ten, he lost his fatherand the family lost their possessions. Dov was sent to a Budapestorphanage for orphans from Hungary, Ukraine and Poland and stayedthere until 1944. He received forged Aryan documents with which he livedunder a false identity.At the end of 1944 he showed up at the offices of the International Red<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 186
