Stern <strong>David</strong> ‘Duda’Born in Kassa (Košice) in 1915Murdered in 1945Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<strong>David</strong> studied at an agricultural school in preparation for life in a kibbutzin Eretz Israel (Palestine). He was the manager of the "Hehalutz" centerin Bratislava. In 1942 <strong>David</strong> moved to Budapest where he remained untilApril 1944. He gave assistance to refugees from Slovakia. <strong>David</strong> returnedto Slovakia within the framework of the re-tiyul and worked in an armsfactory as a German with Aryan documents. He was in charge of thedistribution of the Joint funds. <strong>David</strong> was caught and deported to theextermination camps in Poland. He was shot during the evacuationmarch from the camp one day before the liberation.Stern EvaFriedl Stern ÉvaBorn in Arad in 1913Died in 1944Friend of “Hashomer Hatzair”Eva was Rafi Friedl Benshalom’s sister. She and her husband werefriends of the movement and gave assistance to members who arrived inArad (Romania) from Hungary. In 1944 Eva, her husband, Imre, and theirson Freddie, made illegal aliya on the ‘Mafkura’ ship that sank in theBlack Sea after hitting a floating mine. She and her husband and sondrowned with all the other passengers.Stern Yitzhak ‘Igi’Stern IgnácBorn in Érsekújvár (Nové Zámky) on 19.12.1924Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”From 1943 Yitzhak lived in Budapest and worked as a car painter. In April1944 he was enlisted in a forced labor unit. In September 1944 Yitzhakescaped from the camp and arrived in the “Glass House” on VadászStreet in Budapest. He equipped himself with forged documents and ranvarious errands for his movement, such as the transfer of documents,distribution of food and deliveries. After the liberation of Budapest Yitzhakwas caught by Russian soldiers and, although he claimed to be Jewish,<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 230
