Weisz Yirmiyahu 'Yirmi'Born in Tótsóvár (Solivar) in 1917Died in 1944Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Yirmi’s family lived in Eperjes (Prešov) where he graduated from highschool. In 1941 he was conscripted into the Slovak labor army andserved in the 6th Battalion. Yirmi escaped from the army with the help ofEgon Roth, from his hometown, and crossed the border into Hungaryintending to continue traveling to Romania and from there to make aliya.During his stay in Hungary he took advantage of his knowledge ofHungarian and his Aryan appearance to take part in the undergroundactivities. In the summer of 1944 he succeeded in crossing the borderinto Romania and reaching Bucharest. In the port of Constan†a heboarded the ship “Mafkora” that was sunk by an unidentified submarineand Yirmi drowned in the sea. After the Germaninvasion of Hungary on 19.3.1944, he was enlisted in a forced labor unit.Moshe ran away and arrived at the “Glass House” on Vadász Street. Hereturned to the hostel where a forgery laboratory was being organized.Arrow Cross men broke in, interrogated him, broke his nose and beat himuntil he became unconscious. When he regained consciousness, Moshesucceeded in escaping and reaching the movement’s center.He patrolled the town’s streets wearing a uniform of the National Guardwhose role it was to protect public buildings.
