Weisz Shmuel 'Koli'Weisz SándorBorn in Kassa (Košice) in 1926Member of “Beitar”Shmuel joined the movement at the age of ten. In 1941 he helpedrefugees from Poland move to Budapest. In 1944, after the Germansoccupied his town and concentrated the Jews in the ghetto, Shmuel ranaway to Budapest under a fictitious identity. In the Hungarian capital hebecame an underground activist and mainly forged and distributeddocuments. At the beginning of June 1944 Shmuel was turned in to theGestapo by an informer, tortured and taken to the central military prisonin Budapest. From there he was sent to the Sárvár concentration campand then deported to Auschwitz. From Auschwitz he was transferred toBuchenwald and from there to the Magdeburg camp where he did forcedlabor for six months. He was returned to Buchenwald and later liberatedby the American army.He spent two months in hospital and, after he recovered, he went toKarlovy Vary to complete his studies. In 1946 he got on his way to EretzIsrael (Palestine) in the framework of Aliya Bet.He stayed in Belgium for about nine months and in Cyprus for about ayear. Shmuel worked for the IDF as a civilian for eight years. He openedan independent technical office and was a partner in many defenseprojects. He resides in Herzliya.Weisz VeraWeisz-Lefkovics VeraBorn in Budapest in 1927Died in 1998 in IsraelMember of “Maccabi Hatzair”Vera was engaged in the forgery of documents. She operated on PerczelMór and Mérleg Streets. On Perczel Mór Street Vera was responsible for130 children and ten mothers who were hiding there. The escapees fromdetention places also found refuge in those locations.Vera had contacts with Jews who were hiding on Kolombusz Street, wascaught and taken to the Arrow Cross headquarters on 19, TerézBoulevard. From there, Vera was taken with a group of Jews to the banksof the Danube for execution. Before they could shoot her, she jumpedinto the freezing waters of the river, managed to remain underwater andto get out near one of the bridges. While swimming in the river she was<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 250
