Herman ShlomoHerman Slomo LadislavBorn in Újvidék (Novi Sad) in 1925Perished in Auschwitz in 1944Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”In 1941, after the Hungarian occupation of Újvidék, Shlomo took part inthe movement against Hungarian occupation by writing slogans,scattering nails on the roads in order to impede the movement of theHungarian and German armies and distributing leaflets. He was caughtand sentenced to death but since he was a minor, the sentence wasconverted to incarceration. Shlomo was imprisoned until 1944, thendeported to Auschwitz where he perished.Herman UriHerman EndreBorn in Budapest in 1923Perished in 1944Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Uri studied at the Jewish High School in Budapest. In 1938 he joined the“Hashomer Hatzair” movement. His instructors were Arie (Hunwald)Ya’ari and later <strong>David</strong> Yahin. In 1942 Uri was recruited to help membersof the movement that arrived from Slovakia as refugees. He and hisfriends were arrested by the Hungarian secret police and sent to theGarany detention camp. Uri was released in 1943 and after the Germaninvasion of Hungary on 19.3.1944, he took part in the undergroundactivities as a member of the leadership. On 28.5.1944 he was caughtagain, taken to the Gestapo headquarters on Schwabs Hill (Svábhegy),interrogated and tortured but did not give away any information. He wastransferred from one detention place to another until he was taken to theSárvár detention camp. From there Uri was deported to Auschwitz andthen to another camp after which his traces disappeared.<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 133
