Gárdos JosephGárdos JózsefBorn in Újpest in June 1921Died in Hungary in 1945Member of “Dror Habonim”Joseph came from an assimilated Jewish environment. He joined themovement in the 1930’s. From an early age he was an instructor andteacher for the younger members. At the age of fourteen Joseph alreadyedited the movement’s newspaper. As the refugees from Slovakia startedarriving, he met them and took care of them. Some of them heaccommodated in his own flat. He helped some refugees find work andothers to continue their voyage to Eretz Israel (Palestine). After theGerman invasion of Hungary on 19.3.1944, Joseph walked around underthe fictitious identity of a generations long Christian and later as a citizenof San Salvador. He took part in the rescue of young Jews from theforced labour camps and persuaded Jews to run away from thetransports to Poland.Joseph managed to penetrate the ghettos of Munkács and Huszt carryingforged documents which he gave to the relatives of comrades in themovement. He took part in the planning of the tiyul. He arrived in Arad inRomania, made contact with smugglers and set up “stations” on the routeof the fugitives.After the liberation Joseph returned to Hungary, and took part in settingup children’s homes and the revival of the movement. He was in chargeof educational activities. At that time he was already very ill but continuedhis activities until his last day. Kibbutz Gardosh-Parod was named afterhim.Gárdos LeaTischler FriderikaBorn in Hajdudorog on 10.5.1919Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”Lea joined “Hashomer Hatzair” at the age of sixteen. She lived inBudapest from 1940 and took part in the activities of the movement. In1942 she met her future husband, Johanan.Upon his arrival in Eretz Israel (Palestine), Johanan, who made aliya in alegal way escorting a group of adolescents who had received theauthorization to leave Hungary, gave her name and address to Menahem<strong>Brothers</strong> for <strong>Resistance</strong> and <strong>Rescue</strong> 104
