ghetto, Jean and some of his friends decided to set up a hideout in themountains. Following the draft of his comrades to forced labor units, theplan was altered and a hiding place was prepared in a basement withinthe ghetto, where Jancsu Fried (Ya'acov Paran), his sister Ilonka, andTuli Rosenberg (Anton Roland) found refuge together with Icu. After afew weeks, in August, they all left the basement only to find the entireghetto abandoned. They were caught by patrolling soldiers who handedthem over to the gendarmerie. On their way by train via Kassa toBudapest, Icu managed to jump out of the window but was caught againand transferred to Toloncház, where he met his three comrades. Heescaped and arrived at the Jewish Community building on 12, Síp Street.Following Adonyahu Bilitzer's advice, he identified himself as a refugee ofSchwab (German) origin and joined a German military unit. Whilewearing the German uniform, he went on various missions, and rescuedJews, mainly women and children, from deportation. He escorted them tothe Spanish legation where he met Perlasca, Spain's chargé d'affaires ofItalian origin. On the day of liberation (18.1.1945) Jean stayed at theGlass House. In August he immigrated to Eretz Israel via aliya bet, and in1947 joined the Hagana. Later he served in Pal-Yam, the Marine Corpsof Palmah, and completed his service as the deputy commander of theJaffa port. <strong>By</strong> the end of 1949 Jean immigrated to the United States andstudied at a university.Dr. Grozinger SándorBorn on 27.2.1916 in MéhtelekPassed away in 1966 in AustraliaMember of “Hanoar Hatzioni”Sándor was born in a large pious Jewish family. He studied in a heder inhis village and later in Nagybánya and Debrecen. He studied at theRabbinical Seminary in Budapest and learned to be a tailor. Sándor alsodid a doctorate in history in Budapest. In the year 1942 he earned a Ph.degree in philosophy at the University of Pázmány Péter in Budapest.He returned to Debrecen and was Rabbi Meir Weiss’ deputy. Sándortaught at the local Jewish high school and was active in the Zionistmovement in the framework of “Hatzionim Haclali’im”. At the beginning of1944 he moved to Budapest and joined the “Hanoar Hatzioni” movement.Sándor engaged in obtaining documents. He was the assistant of OttóKomoly, president of the Hungarian Zionist Association who was at thehead of the Relief and <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee. Sándor’s role was to take careof the fugitives from forced labour units.
