Grosz BetzalelGrosz Gábor (Böci)Born in Tokaj in 1924Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”When Betzalel was nine years old, his family moved to Budapest. Hegraduated from a business high school in 1942. He first joined the“Maccabi Hatzair” movement and later “Hashomer Hatzair”. In May 1944Betzalel was enlisted in a forced labour unit. He distributed forgeddocuments, received from comrades in the movement, in and outside thecamp. The conscripts did dangerous work in sites that were bombarded.Betzalel ran away from the unit and hid thanks to Aryan documents. Hewent into the ghetto as a Christian, arrived in the “Glass House”,distributed forged documents and helped Jews escape.Betzalel made aliya illegally in 1946. The ship he was sailing on wascaught by the British and its passengers were imprisoned in Atlit. After astay of several months in Atlit, Betzalel was released and arrived inKibbutz Ma’anit. He was one of the founders of Kibbutz Yassur. Betzalelleft the kibbutz and in 1970 he opened an accountancy firm which wasactive until 1995. Betzalel is retired and resides in Modiin.Grosz MetukaFellner EditBorn in Debrecen on 29.10.1925Member of “Hanoar Hatzioni”Metuka joined the movement at the age of thirteen. In 1942 she was amember of a hahshara in Budapest. After the Germans occupiedHungary, Metuka engaged in obtaining authentic Christian documentsin order to distribute them to those who needed them. In the summerof 1944 she went on a tiyul to the Yugoslavian border with refugeesfrom Poland. Metuka was caught by Hungarian gendarmes andimprisoned in the Szeged prison. She was interrogated and torturedby the Gestapo. Metuka was transferred to a prison in Budapest andeventually sent to Auschwitz. After the liberation she returned toHungary and, in 1946, Metuka made aliya with her husband Yitzhakwithin the framework of the B'riha. Metuka spent almost a year in acamp in Cyprus.
