2. Manually-fired boilers for model locomotive, boat, tractor, stationary engine, or antique motor vehicles constructed <strong>and</strong><br />

maintained only as a hobby for exhibition or educational purposes (not for commercial use), provided such boilers have<br />

an inside diameter less than 12 inches or a grate area <strong>of</strong> 2 square feet or less <strong>and</strong> are equipped with an ASME-stamped<br />

safety valve <strong>of</strong> adequate capacity <strong>and</strong> size, a water level indicator, <strong>and</strong> a pressure gage.<br />

3. Pressure vessels used for transportation <strong>and</strong> storage <strong>of</strong> compressed gases when constructed <strong>and</strong> used in compliance<br />

with ICC specifications <strong>and</strong> regulations.<br />

4. Air tanks located on vehicles operating under the rules <strong>of</strong> state authorities <strong>and</strong> used for carrying passengers or freight.<br />

5. Air tanks installed on the right-<strong>of</strong>-way <strong>of</strong> railroads <strong>and</strong> used directly in the operation <strong>of</strong> trains.<br />

6. Pressure vessels that do not exceed:<br />

a. 5 cubic feet in volume <strong>and</strong> 250 psig;<br />

b. 1-1/2 cubic feet in volume; or<br />

c. An inside diameter <strong>of</strong> 6 inches <strong>and</strong> 3,000 psig.<br />

7. Pressure vessels operating at a working pressure not exceeding 15 psig.<br />

8. Water-containing vessels (excluding hot-water heaters) having a working pressure not exceeding 125 psig, including<br />

those with air, the compression <strong>of</strong> which serves only as a cushion.<br />

9. Tanks containing air <strong>and</strong> liquids in which pressure is maintained by pumps.<br />

10. Group I refrigerant receivers (American Society <strong>of</strong> Heating, Refrigerating <strong>and</strong> Air Conditioning Engineers).<br />

11. Hot-water heaters installed after the effective date <strong>of</strong> this act, provided that none <strong>of</strong> the following limitations is exceeded:<br />

a. Heat input <strong>of</strong> 200,000 BTU per hour;<br />

b. Water temperature <strong>of</strong> 210°F.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, except:<br />

1. Private residences or apartment houses <strong>of</strong> fewer than three family units.<br />

2. Private residences or apartment houses with three or more family units with an output <strong>of</strong> less than 200,000 BTU per<br />

hour.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

1. Power boilers <strong>and</strong> high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers:<br />

a. One annual certificate inspection;<br />

b. One annual external inspection while under pressure, if possible.<br />

2. Low-pressure steam or vapor heating boilers, hot-water heating <strong>and</strong> hot-water supply boilers: one biennial certificate<br />

inspection, with an internal inspection at least once quadrennially where construction permits.<br />

3. Pressure vessels: one biennial certificate inspection.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies <strong>and</strong> commissioned by the department are accepted<br />

in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by a department inspector.<br />

2. A copy <strong>of</strong> the certificate inspection report must be filed with the commissioner within ten days after inspection.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> department should be notified within 30 days <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> dangerous conditions.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> department should be notified immediately <strong>of</strong> insurance discontinued or refused on account <strong>of</strong> dangerous conditions.<br />
