CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn<br />

Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection is issued by the department upon payment <strong>of</strong> $50.00 for unfired <strong>and</strong> low-pressure boilers <strong>and</strong> $35.00 for<br />

high-pressure boilers. Certificate is valid for not more than 26 months for unfired <strong>and</strong> low-pressure boilers <strong>and</strong> 14 months for<br />

high-pressure boilers.<br />

State FeeS<br />

1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s – internal inspections:<br />

a. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 5 hp or less or 50 square feet or less heating surface ..................................................................................$40.00<br />

b. <strong>Boiler</strong>s more than 5 hp or more than 50 square feet heating surface .........................................................................$40.00<br />

c. <strong>Boiler</strong>s – external inspections ............................................................................................................................................... $25.00<br />

2. Pressure vessels:<br />

a. Vessels having a cross-sectional area <strong>of</strong> 50 square feet or less .....................................................................................$25.00<br />

b. For each additional 100 square feet or fraction there<strong>of</strong> ................................................................................................... $6.00<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> unfired pressure vessels such as paper machine rolls or dryers operating as a single machine or unit shall be considered as<br />

one pressure vessel.<br />

<strong>The</strong> inspection <strong>of</strong> secondh<strong>and</strong> or used boilers shall be charged at a rate <strong>of</strong> not less than $250.00 for one half day <strong>of</strong> four hours (or<br />

less) <strong>and</strong> $500.00 for one full day <strong>of</strong> four to eight hours (plus all expenses, including travel <strong>and</strong> hotel). Special inspections, shop inspection<br />

<strong>and</strong> quality control system reviews, or nuclear surveys shall be charged at a rate <strong>of</strong> not less than $250.00 for one half day <strong>of</strong> four<br />

hours (or less) <strong>and</strong> $500.00 for four to eight hours (plus expenses for travel, hotel, <strong>and</strong> sustenance).<br />

Any inspection upon installation by permit (i.e., new, reinstallation, secondh<strong>and</strong> boiler, lethal service pressure vessel, etc.) is subject to<br />

the fees in accordance with Rule 0800-3-3-09(10) <strong>of</strong> the Tennessee <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Regulations</strong>.<br />

mISCellaneOUS<br />

1. Reciprocal Commission is issued to inspectors holding approved state or <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Commission. Fee is $50.00.<br />

2. Commissions must be renewed annually. Renewal fee is $25.00.<br />

3. Before installation, secondh<strong>and</strong> unfired pressure vessels must be inspected by a state inspector <strong>and</strong> issued an installation<br />

permit. All inquiries should be directed to the chief inspector.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> company or person responsible for the installation <strong>of</strong> a high- or low-pressure boiler or lethal service pressure vessel<br />

shall obtain an installation permit prior to any work being performed. <strong>The</strong> application <strong>and</strong> guidelines to submit may<br />

be found on the Web site or inquiry to the chief inspector.<br />

5. Erection, repairs, <strong>and</strong> alterations to boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels shall be completed by persons or firms licensed as<br />

provided in the <strong>Boiler</strong> Erectors <strong>and</strong> Repairers Licensing Act. Repair <strong>and</strong> Alteration Report Form R-1 <strong>and</strong> Form R-2, signed<br />

by the authorizing inspector, shall be submitted to the boiler <strong>and</strong> pressure vessel division for each repair <strong>and</strong> alteration.<br />

6. Tennessee does not allow repairs <strong>of</strong> a routine nature.<br />

7. A copy <strong>of</strong> Tennessee’s boiler <strong>and</strong> pressure vessel rules may be obtained by calling or writing to the <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Elevator<br />

Inspection Division, by emailing the chief inspector, or by visiting the Web site. Cost: no charge.<br />

8. A copy <strong>of</strong> the Tennessee database is available to all authorized inspection agencies free <strong>of</strong> charge.<br />

9. During scheduled quarterly meetings, the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> will review all submissions <strong>of</strong> technical inquiries for Rule<br />

Cases <strong>and</strong> Rule Interpretations. Guidelines for submission can be retrieved by visiting the Web site.<br />
