6. Unfired pressure vessels having an external or internal working pressure not exceeding 15 psig.<br />

7. Unfired pressure vessels that do not exceed 6 inches inside diameter.<br />

8. Unfired pressure vessels containing water heated by steam or other indirect means, <strong>and</strong> directly fired hot-water supply<br />

boilers or heaters, when none <strong>of</strong> the following is exceeded:<br />

a. Heat input <strong>of</strong> 200,000 BTU per hour;<br />

b. Water temperature <strong>of</strong> 210°F;<br />

c. Normal water-containing capacity <strong>of</strong> 120 gallons.<br />

9. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels operated <strong>and</strong> maintained by public utility.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, except the following:<br />

1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels located on farms <strong>and</strong> used solely for agricultural or horticultural purposes.<br />

2. Heating boilers or pressure vessels which are located in private residences or in apartment houses <strong>of</strong> fewer than six family<br />

units.<br />

3. Any pressure vessels used as an external part <strong>of</strong> an electrical circuit breaker or transformer.<br />

4. Pressure vessels on remote oil or gas production lease locations that have fewer than 10 buildings intended for human<br />

occupancy per 0.25 square miles <strong>and</strong> where the closest building is at least 220 yards from any vessel.<br />

5. Pressure vessels used for the storage <strong>of</strong> liquid propane gas under the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the state fire marshal, except for pressure<br />

vessels used for storage <strong>of</strong> liquid propane gas that are 2,000 gallons or above <strong>and</strong> have been modified or altered.<br />

6. Air storage tanks not exceeding 16 cubic feet (120 gallons) in size <strong>and</strong> under 250 psig pressure.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

1. Power <strong>and</strong> high-temperature water boilers shall receive a certificate inspection annually, internal inspection where<br />

construction permits, otherwise it shall be as complete an inspection as possible. Such boilers shall also be inspected<br />

externally while under operation pressure.<br />

2. Low-pressure steam <strong>and</strong> vapor boilers shall receive a certificate inspection biennially with an internal inspection quadrennially<br />

where construction permits.<br />

3. Hot-water heating <strong>and</strong> hot-water supply boilers shall receive a certificate inspection biennially with an internal inspection<br />

at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the inspector.<br />

4. Hot-water heaters over 200,000 BTU per hour or 120 gallon capacity.<br />

5. Pressure vessels subject to internal corrosion shall receive a certificate inspection quadrennially with an internal inspection<br />

at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the inspector. All other pressure vessels shall be inspected at intervals set by the board, with at least<br />

a quadrennial certificate inspection. Pressure vessels that are fired with gas, oil, or other means, such as electricity, are<br />

considered boilers <strong>and</strong> inspected as required above.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies <strong>and</strong> commissioned by the department are accepted<br />

in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by the department. Reports <strong>of</strong> inspections must be filed with the department within 30 days<br />

following each inspection on forms as promulgated by the commissioner.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> new business or discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance within 30 days. Suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance or<br />

refusal to issue an operating permit due to unsafe conditions requires immediate notification <strong>of</strong> the chief engineer with a copy<br />

<strong>of</strong> the inspection report.<br />

CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn<br />

1. Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection is issued by the department. This inspection certificate is valid for not more than 12 months for<br />

high-pressure power boilers; 24 months for low-pressure heating boilers, hot-water supply boilers, <strong>and</strong> heaters; <strong>and</strong> 48<br />

months for pressure vessels. Each certificate has a 60-day grace period.<br />
