d. Used solely for hot-water supply carrying a pressure <strong>of</strong> not more than 160 psi;<br />

e. Operated at temperatures <strong>of</strong> not more than 210°F provided that such heaters are not installed in schools, day-care<br />

centers, public or private hospitals, nursing or boarding homes, churches, or public buildings, as defined in section<br />

1.1.<br />

6. Antique or model boilers used in public, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it engineering, or scientific museums operated for educational,<br />

historical, or exhibition purposes (having a shell diameter <strong>of</strong> less than 12 inches <strong>and</strong> a grate surface area <strong>of</strong> less than one<br />

square foot).<br />

7. Public service companies as defined in Connecticut General Statutes (Section 16-1).<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, plus water heaters in public buildings, regardless <strong>of</strong><br />

size or BTU rating.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

Power boilers:<br />

1. One annual internal <strong>and</strong> external inspection.<br />

2. One annual external inspection under operating conditions not more than six months after the internal <strong>and</strong> external<br />

inspection.<br />

Power boilers that operate with internal water treatment under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a qualified engineer:<br />

1. One internal <strong>and</strong> external inspection every eighteen months while not under pressure.<br />

2. One external inspection under operating conditions not more than nine months after the external <strong>and</strong> internal<br />

inspection.<br />

Low-Pressure <strong>Boiler</strong>s<br />

Low-pressure steam boilers, hot-water heating boilers, hot-water supply boilers, <strong>and</strong> hot water heaters; an external<br />

biennially, with an internal at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the inspector.<br />

Internal <strong>and</strong> external certificate inspections to be filed with the department within 30 days <strong>of</strong> inspection.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies <strong>and</strong> commissioned by the department are accepted<br />

in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by a department inspector.<br />

2. Reports <strong>of</strong> internal <strong>and</strong> external inspections shall be reported immediately in every instance when hazardous conditions<br />

are found.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> a hazardous condition.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified within 30 days <strong>of</strong> new business <strong>and</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance.<br />

CertIFICate OF OperatIOn<br />

1. A Certificate <strong>of</strong> Operation for a power boiler, valid for 12 months, is issued by the department upon payment <strong>of</strong> a $80.00<br />

fee to the department.<br />

2. A Certificate <strong>of</strong> Operation for low-pressure boilers <strong>and</strong> hot-water heaters, valid for 24 months, is issued by the<br />

department upon the payment <strong>of</strong> a $80.00 fee to the department.<br />

3. Any operating certificate shall be immediately invalid if the boiler is relocated or altered, unless such relocation or<br />

alteration has been approved in accordance with the boiler code <strong>and</strong> regulations.<br />

4. No fee shall be required <strong>of</strong> the state or any agency <strong>of</strong> the state.<br />
