Stamping:<br />

Where appropriate, the following <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> stamps or ASME Code symbol stamps are required:<br />

1. <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>: R, VR.<br />

2. ASME Code: all.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG<br />

<strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels (installed after November 12, 1986), except:<br />

1. Water heaters, pool heaters, <strong>and</strong> hot-water supply boilers in which none <strong>of</strong> the following limitations is exceeded:<br />

a. A heat input <strong>of</strong> 200,000 BTU per hour;<br />

b. A water temperature <strong>of</strong> 210°F;<br />

c. A nominal water-containing capacity <strong>of</strong> 120 gallons (provided with one or more ASME-stamped safety relief valves).<br />

2. Hot-water storage tanks less than or equal to 120 gallons.<br />

3. Coil-type hot-water boilers used only for steam-vapor cleaning <strong>of</strong> things such as machinery, equipment, <strong>and</strong> buildings,<br />

when none <strong>of</strong> the following limitations is exceeded:<br />

a. 1-inch diameter tubing or 3/4-inch nominal pipe size with no drums or headers attached;<br />

b. Nominal water-containing capacity <strong>of</strong> 6 gallons;<br />

c. Water temperature <strong>of</strong> 350°F;<br />

d. Steam not generated within the coil;<br />

e. One or more safety relief valves must be installed <strong>and</strong> adequate controls provided.<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING. Required safety controls were not gr<strong>and</strong>fathered<br />

for installations before November 12, 1986.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

1. Power boilers; high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers; waste heat boilers; <strong>and</strong> unfired steam boilers:<br />

a. An annual certificate inspection which shall be an internal inspection where construction permits;<br />

b. An annual external inspection while under normal operating conditions.<br />

2. Low-pressure boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels: A biennial certificate inspection:<br />

a. Steam or vapor boilers shall have an external inspection <strong>and</strong> an internal inspection biennially where construction<br />

permits;<br />

b. Hot-water heating <strong>and</strong> hot-water supply boilers shall have an external inspection biennially <strong>and</strong> where construction<br />

permits, an internal inspection at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the inspector;<br />

c. Pressure vessels shall have an external inspection biennially.<br />

Pressure vessels that are under the supervision <strong>of</strong> an owner/user inspection agency shall be inspected at the same interval unless<br />

otherwise agreed upon by the board <strong>and</strong> the owner/user inspection agency.<br />

3. Effective January 1, 2007: An installation permit must be obtained from the Division <strong>of</strong> Fire Safety, <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure<br />

Vessel Safety Unit for the installation <strong>of</strong> all boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels that fall within the scope <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure<br />

Vessel Act (m<strong>and</strong>atory for all installations starting on or after January 1, 2008).<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

Inspectors employed by insurance companies <strong>and</strong> approved owner/user inspection agencies are accepted in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections<br />

made by the department. Reports shall be made on <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> forms to the chief inspector.<br />
