ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG<br />
All boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels, except the following:<br />
1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s under federal control.<br />
2. Unfired pressure vessels meeting requirements <strong>of</strong> the US Department <strong>of</strong> Transportation for shipment <strong>of</strong> liquids or gases<br />
under pressure.<br />
3. Air tanks located on vehicles operating under rules <strong>of</strong> other state authorities <strong>and</strong> used for carrying passengers or<br />
freight.<br />
4. Air tanks installed on the right-<strong>of</strong>-way <strong>of</strong> railroads <strong>and</strong> used directly in the operation <strong>of</strong> trains.<br />
5. Unfired pressure vessels:<br />
a. Having a volume <strong>of</strong> 5 cubic feet or less;<br />
b. Designed for a working pressure <strong>of</strong> 15 psi or less.<br />
6. Unfired pressure vessels containing liquified petroleum gases (under jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the state fire marshal).<br />
7. Hot-water supply boilers (water heaters) with less than 200,000 BTU per hour heat input. However, such water heaters<br />
with a heat input <strong>of</strong> between 100,000 <strong>and</strong> 199,999 BTU per hour are subject to registration, inspection, <strong>and</strong> inspection<br />
certificate requirements <strong>of</strong> the Tennessee <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Regulations</strong>.<br />
ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />
Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, except the following:<br />
1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s located on farms used solely for agricultural purposes.<br />
2. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels located in municipalities where boiler inspection ordinances are in force, in accordance<br />
with provisions <strong>of</strong> Section 68-122-105 <strong>of</strong> the Tennessee Code.<br />
3. Steam boilers used for heating purposes carrying a pressure <strong>of</strong> not more than 15 psi, located in private residences or in<br />
apartment houses <strong>of</strong> fewer than six families.<br />
4. Hot-water heating boilers carrying a pressure <strong>of</strong> not more than 30 psi, located in private residences or in apartment<br />
houses <strong>of</strong> fewer than six families.<br />
5. Unfired pressure vessels containing only water under pressure for domestic supply purposes <strong>and</strong> operated at a temperature<br />
not over 200°F, including those containing air, the compression <strong>of</strong> which serves only as a cushion.<br />
6. Hot-water supply boilers (water heaters) with less than 100,000 BTU per hour heat input.<br />

<strong>The</strong> board sets the interval for external inspection <strong>of</strong> vessels not subject to internal corrosion.<br />
Certificate inspection <strong>of</strong> such vessels shall be made every two years.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />
1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance <strong>and</strong> owner/user companies <strong>and</strong> commissioned by the department<br />
are accepted in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by department inspector.<br />
2. Initial inspections to new, reinstalled, <strong>and</strong> secondh<strong>and</strong> high-pressure <strong>and</strong> low-pressure boilers <strong>and</strong> lethal service pressure<br />
vessels must be performed by a department deputy inspector.<br />
3. Reports <strong>of</strong> internal inspections must be filed with the department on a board-approved form within 30 days.<br />
4. Reports <strong>of</strong> external inspections must be filed with the department on a board-approved form within 30 days.<br />
5. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> dangerous conditions.<br />
6. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> new business <strong>and</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance.<br />
