2. Hot-water heating boilers which are located in private residences or apartment houses of fewer than six family units,
provided the boiler heat input does not exceed 400,000 BTU per hour.
3. Hot-water boilers and hot-water heaters operated at pressures not exceeding 160 psig – or temperatures not exceeding
250°F – located in private residences or in apartment houses of fewer than six family units, provided the boiler or
hot-water heater is not in a place of public assembly.
4. Pressure vessels on remote oil or gas producing lease locations that have fewer than ten buildings intended for human
occupancy per .25 square mile and where the closest building is at least 220 yards from any vessel.
5. Pressure vessels not exceeding:
a. 5 cubic feet in volume and 250 psig in pressure;
b. 1-1/2 cubic feet in volume and 600 psig in pressure.
6. Air tanks at gas or service stations used to inflate tires on automobiles or other vehicles.

Low-pressure steam boilers shall be given an internal inspection where construction permits.
Low-pressure hot-water boilers shall be given an internal inspection at the discretion of the inspector.
Vessels not subject to internal corrosion shall be inspected externally.
InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS
1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies or approved owner/user inspection agencies and
commissioned by the department are accepted in lieu of inspections made by a department inspector.
2. Reports of required internal or external inspections must be filed with the department on National Board forms within
21 days after inspection.
3. Reports of external inspections on power boilers are not required unless there are code violations or dangerous conditions.
4. The department must be notified of boilers or pressure vessels on which insurance is written, canceled, not renewed, or
suspended and the reasons thereof.
5. The department must be notified immediately on National Board forms of all boilers suspended, canceled, or refused due
to existing dangerous conditions.
6. Any person, firm, partnership, or corporation operating pressure vessels in the state may seek approval and registration
as an owner/user inspection agency. An application must be filed with the Division of Occupational Safety on prescribed
forms. An application fee of $50.00 and bond in the penal sum of $25,000.00 is required. The bond must remain valid
during the period the owner/user inspection agency is in effect.
CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn
A Certificate of Inspection is issued by the department, upon payment directly to the department, of an annual $50.00 fee for
boilers and an annual $25.00 fee for pressure vessels. Fees apply to owners/users of all boilers and pressure vessels inspected by
both insurance company inspectors and approved owner/user inspection agencies.
