rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG<br />

Construction:<br />

1. ASME Code (2007 Edition, All Addenda), Sections I, II, III (Divisions 1, 2), IV, V, VI, VII, VIII (Divisions 1, 2), IX, X, XI, <strong>and</strong><br />

code cases.<br />

2. A Code <strong>of</strong> Construction which is a national or internal st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong> is recognized by regulation <strong>and</strong> by the country <strong>of</strong><br />

origin, when applicable, shall be acceptable as an alternate Code <strong>of</strong> Construction provided it has been completely<br />

approved <strong>and</strong> accepted as an alternative Code <strong>of</strong> Construction by <strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure Vessel<br />

Inspectors.<br />

3. Code addenda <strong>and</strong> case interpretations accepted unless specific exceptions are taken. Code rules updated every three<br />

years.<br />

4. <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Inspection Code (2007 Edition, All Addenda).<br />

5. <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> registration is required for all pressure vessels.<br />

6. Class I pressure vessels must be constructed in accordance with pertinent sections <strong>of</strong> ASME <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure Vessel<br />

Code valid at the time <strong>of</strong> construction. <strong>The</strong>se vessels shall be stamped <strong>and</strong> identified as prescribed by the ASME Code.<br />

Vessels under this category shall be stamped <strong>and</strong> registered with the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>.<br />

7. Class II pressure vessels are existing installations, constructed prior to January 1, 1957, in accordance with API-ASME<br />

joint code <strong>and</strong> registered with the state prior to January 1, 1957.<br />

8. Class III pressure vessels are those identified as New Jersey-approved.<br />

9. Class IV pressure vessels may be constructed in accordance with the user/inspector provision <strong>of</strong> the ASME Code <strong>and</strong><br />

must be shop-inspected by a user/inspector who is approved by <strong>and</strong> registered with the department.<br />

10. New Jersey-approved vessels require non-code design review fees <strong>of</strong> $3,000.00 each. Additional fees shall be required<br />

for designs submitted for a single project <strong>and</strong> shall apply to each user application <strong>of</strong> the design.<br />

11. Liquid petroleum gas installations are covered under a separate law. Tanks must be constructed in accordance with<br />

Section VIII <strong>of</strong> the ASME <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure Vessel Code, shop-inspected, tested, <strong>and</strong> stamped by an inspector holding a<br />

<strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Commission <strong>and</strong> employed by an authorized inspection agency.<br />
