b. Liquified petroleum gas tanks in accordance with the following schedule:<br />

Usage Over 125 Gallons<br />

Transportation tanks 5 years<br />

Dispensing units, trap tanks <strong>and</strong> skid tanks 3 years<br />

Mobile fuel tanks 5 years<br />

Storage tanks vapor withdrawal 5 years<br />

See Section 476 <strong>of</strong> the Unfired Pressure Vessel Safety <strong>Laws</strong> for inspection <strong>of</strong> underground tanks.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

1. Inspections made by inspectors holding a valid Certificate <strong>of</strong> Competency issued by the division are accepted in lieu <strong>of</strong><br />

inspections made by a Pressure Vessel Unit engineer. <strong>The</strong> Pressure Vessel Unit will issue the Permit to Operate upon<br />

receipt <strong>of</strong> the inspection report <strong>and</strong> a $15.00 fee to cover the cost <strong>of</strong> processing the permit. If the processing fee is not<br />

received at the time <strong>of</strong> receipt <strong>of</strong> the inspection report, the Pressure Vessel Unit will notify the person owning or having<br />

the custody, management, or operation <strong>of</strong> the tank or boiler that the permit will be issued upon receipt <strong>of</strong> the fee.<br />

2. Reports <strong>of</strong> inspection must be filed with the Pressure Vessel Unit on prescribed forms within 21 days after inspection.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> Pressure Vessel Unit must be notified <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> dangerous conditions on approved forms.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> Pressure Vessel Unit must be notified <strong>of</strong> new business <strong>and</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance on approved forms.<br />

CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn<br />

1. Permit to Operate, valid for 12 months for power boilers, 36 months for portable air tanks, <strong>and</strong> five years for all other<br />

air tanks, is issued by the inspection agency on forms furnished by the Pressure Vessel Unit after object is in compliance<br />

with regulations <strong>and</strong> necessary fees are paid. Air tanks subject to a maximum allowable working pressure not exceeding<br />

150 psi, as shown by the required ASME Code marking, <strong>and</strong> having a volume <strong>of</strong> 25 cubic feet or less, shall be issued an<br />

Indefinite Permit provided that they comply with all applicable requirements <strong>of</strong> the state safety order.<br />

2. Permit to Operate is issued for liquified petroleum gas tanks in accordance with the schedule in INSPECTIONS REQUIRED.<br />

State FeeS<br />

1. A fee <strong>of</strong> $110.00 per hour or part there<strong>of</strong>, including travel time, shall be charged for all shop, field-erection <strong>and</strong> resale<br />

inspections <strong>of</strong> all tanks, boilers, parts <strong>of</strong> tanks <strong>and</strong> boilers, <strong>and</strong> nuclear components, as well as consultations, surveys, audit<br />

manual reviews, <strong>and</strong> other activities required or related to the ASME Code or other national st<strong>and</strong>ard for all boiler<br />

<strong>and</strong> tank shops when made by qualified engineers employed by the Pressure Vessel Unit.<br />

2. A fee <strong>of</strong> $135.00 per hour or any part there<strong>of</strong>, based on quarter-hour intervals, shall be charged for field permit<br />

inspection <strong>of</strong> air tanks, liquified petroleum gas tanks, <strong>and</strong> boilers by qualified safety engineers employed by the Pressure<br />

Vessel Unit.<br />

3. Whenever a person owning or having the custody, management, or operation <strong>of</strong> an air tank, liquified petroleum gas<br />

tank, or boiler fails to pay the fees required under this section within 60 days after notification, said person shall pay, in<br />

addition to the fees required under this section, a penalty fee equal to 100 percent <strong>of</strong> the fee.<br />

mISCellaneOUS<br />

1. Examinations for Certificate <strong>of</strong> Competency are held by the Pressure Vessel Unit in March, June, September, <strong>and</strong> December.<br />

<strong>The</strong> written portion <strong>of</strong> the examination is that <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure Vessel Inspectors. A<br />

$250.00 examination fee is required. Applications for permission to sit for examinations must be received by the<br />

Pressure Vessel Unit at least 30 days prior to examination date.<br />

2. Reciprocal Commission may be issued to an inspector holding a valid <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Commission, providing he/she<br />

satisfactorily passes a multiple-choice, open-book examination on the California <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Fired Pressure Vessel <strong>and</strong> Unfired<br />

Pressure Vessel Safety Orders, <strong>and</strong> applicable sections <strong>of</strong> the Labor Code.<br />

3. Repairs by fusion welding must be made in accordance with California Safety Orders. No alteration or repair shall be<br />

made without the authorization <strong>of</strong> a qualified inspector; this includes qualified inspectors in the employ <strong>of</strong> owner/user<br />

organizations whose inservice programs have been approved by the Pressure Vessel Unit.<br />

4. State contractor's license required to sell, install, or repair boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels.<br />

5. A license is not required to operate boilers or pressure vessels, except in the City <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles.<br />

6. A copy <strong>of</strong> the boiler <strong>and</strong> pressure vessel laws, Unfired Pressure Vessel Safety Orders <strong>and</strong> <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Fired Pressure Vessel Safety<br />
