ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG<br />

All boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels, except the following:<br />

1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s owned or operated by the federal government.<br />

2. Locomotive boilers <strong>of</strong> carriers subject to Federal Locomotive Inspection Act.<br />

3. <strong>Boiler</strong>s located in private residences <strong>and</strong> in apartment houses having fewer than six families.<br />

4. <strong>Boiler</strong>s in any city where city boiler inspectors, record-keeping, <strong>and</strong> inspection codes are comparable to the state<br />

program.<br />

5. Service <strong>and</strong> domestic-type water heaters that are:<br />

a. Less than 200,000 BTU per hour input;<br />

b. Less than 120 gallons;<br />

c. Operated at less than 210°F.<br />

6. Vessels having an internal or external operating pressure less than 15 psi with no limitation on size.<br />

7. Vessels having an inside diameter not exceeding 6 inches with no limitation on pressure.<br />

8. Vessels containing water under pressure, including those containing air, the compression <strong>of</strong> which serves as a cushion,<br />

with design pressure less than 30 psi <strong>and</strong> design temperature less than 210°F.<br />

9. A hot-water supply storage tank heated by steam or other indirect means when none <strong>of</strong> the following limitations is<br />

exceeded:<br />

a. Heat input <strong>of</strong> 200,000 BTU per hour;<br />

b. Water temperature <strong>of</strong> 210°F;<br />

c. Nominal water-containing capacity <strong>of</strong> 120 gallons.<br />

10. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels under federal control or regulation.<br />

11. Locomotive boilers used exclusively for a personal hobby.<br />

12. Any other pressure vessel exempted in scope <strong>of</strong> ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, except pressure vessels. All new <strong>and</strong> re-installed<br />

boilers require application to be submitted to the <strong>Boiler</strong> Inspection Section prior to installation. <strong>The</strong> application is available on<br />

the Colorado <strong>Boiler</strong> Inspection website.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

<strong>Boiler</strong>s:<br />

Power boilers <strong>and</strong> high-temperature water boilers shall receive a certificate inspection annually. Such boilers where construction<br />

permits shall also receive an internal inspection annually, or when the inspector deems necessary. <strong>The</strong> internal<br />

inspection frequency may be extended to triennially with prior approval from the <strong>Boiler</strong> Division.<br />

Low-pressure boilers, water heaters, <strong>and</strong> direct-fired jacketed steam kettles shall receive a certificate inspection biennially<br />

with an internal inspection for low pressure steam boilers, where construction permits, at least every two years, or when<br />

the inspector deems necessary.<br />

Pressure Vessels:<br />

1. ASME Code vessels (except those exempted above). A pressure vessel shall be considered to be suitable for use in<br />

Colorado if it bears ASME Code stamping. Newly installed vessels must be registered with the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>.<br />

2. A non-ASME Code pressure vessel shall not be continued in service until certified by the <strong>Boiler</strong> Inspection Section <strong>of</strong><br />

the Division <strong>of</strong> Oil <strong>and</strong> Public Safety.<br />
