4. Unfired pressure vessels meeting requirements <strong>of</strong> the US Department <strong>of</strong> Transportation <strong>and</strong> Public Facilities for shipment<br />

<strong>of</strong> liquids <strong>and</strong> gases under pressure.<br />

5. Air tanks located on vehicles operating under rules <strong>of</strong> other state authorities <strong>and</strong> used for carrying passengers or<br />

freight.<br />

6. Air tanks installed on the right-<strong>of</strong>-way <strong>of</strong> railroads <strong>and</strong> used directly in the operation <strong>of</strong> trains.<br />

7. Pressure vessels installed before July 1, 1971, when:<br />

a. Volume is 15 cubic feet or less when not located in a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly;<br />

b. Volume is 5 cubic feet or less when located in a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly;<br />

8. Pressure vessels installed after July 1, 1971, when:<br />

a. Volume is 15 cubic feet or less <strong>and</strong> adequately protected by pressure-relieving devices set to function at 300 psi or<br />

less when not located in a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly;<br />

b. Volume is 5 cubic feet or less <strong>and</strong> adequately protected by pressure-relieving devices set to function at 250 psi or<br />

less when located in a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly;<br />

c. Volume <strong>of</strong> 1-1/2 cubic feet or less regardless <strong>of</strong> pressure or location, unless otherwise covered by the act.<br />

9. Unfired pressure vessels (other than nuclear vessels) protected by adequate pressure-relieving devices set to function<br />

at not over 15 psig.<br />

10. Pressure vessels containing liquified petroleum gases <strong>and</strong> regulated by the Fire Prevention & Building Safety<br />

Commission.<br />

11. Surgical sterilizers, c<strong>of</strong>fee urns <strong>and</strong> steam-jacketed food cookers not exceeding size limits specified by the board.<br />

12. Commercial toy boilers <strong>and</strong> miniature model boilers constructed as a hobby, <strong>of</strong> a size not exceeding that specified by<br />

the board.<br />

13. Pressure vessels containing anhydrous ammonia (used in transportation or distribution storage <strong>of</strong> the product as a<br />

liquid fertilizer) for which construction, installation, <strong>and</strong> safety requirements generally are separately prescribed in other<br />

regulations existing or hereafter promulgated by the State <strong>of</strong> Indiana or an administrative agency there<strong>of</strong> (does not<br />

include vessels in refineries or manufacturing or process plants).<br />

14. Nuclear vessels for the collection <strong>and</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> nuclear waste from a nuclear energy system which are not subject to<br />

pressures greater than would prevail if they were vented to the atmosphere.<br />

15. St<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong> miniature traction engine boilers <strong>and</strong> other boilers used solely for exhibition purposes.<br />

16. A locomotive boiler used only on a tourist attraction railway.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />

<strong>The</strong> following items are exempt from field inspection <strong>and</strong> permitting:<br />

1. Any regulated boiler or pressure vessel located on a farm <strong>and</strong> used solely for agricultural purposes.<br />

2. Any steam boiler or water-heating boiler meeting all <strong>of</strong> the following requirements:<br />

a. Located in an owner-occupied residence, a residential structure with fewer than seven apartments, or a place other<br />

than a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly;<br />

b. Operated for heating purposes at a pressure not exceeding 15 psig, if qualifying as a steam boiler, <strong>and</strong> operated at a<br />

pressure not exceeding 30 psig, if qualifying as a water-heating boiler;<br />

c. Having a gross output rating not exceeding 215,000 BTU per hour, if not located in a place <strong>of</strong> public assembly.<br />

3. Any pressure vessel meeting all <strong>of</strong> the following requirements:<br />

a. Containing only water under pressure for domestic supply purposes, including one containing air, if the compressed<br />

air serves only as a cushion or as part <strong>of</strong> an airlift pumping system;<br />

b. Located in an owner-occupied residence or a residential structure with fewer than seven apartments.<br />

4. Any pressure vessel used as an integral part <strong>of</strong> an electrical circuit breaker.<br />
