CSA B51 (Current Edition) provides guidelines only, B52 (Current edition), and Nova Scotia regulations. 2. ASME Code (2004 Edition, 2006 Addendum), Sections I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII (Divisions 1, 2, 3), IX, X, and code cases. 3. ASME Code addenda and case interpretations accepted after review. 4. ASME U-1 form is acceptable if CRN and drawing numbers are included. 5. Manufacturers must register designs with the department and obtain authorization to fabricate power boilers, unfired pressure vessels, and fittings for installation in the province. 6. National Board Inspection Code (Current Edition, Current Addendum). 7. Boiler and pressure vessel designs must be registered with the department before objects are manufactured. Stamping: Where appropriate, the following National Board stamps or ASME Code symbol stamps are required: 1. National Board: R (accepted), VR. 2. ASME Code: A, M, PP, S, U, U2, UM, UV, V. ASME stamps are accepted for boilers and pressure vessels manufactured outside of Canada. A CRN is required on boilers and pressure vessels. MEMBER JURISDICTION ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG All boilers and unfired pressure vessels containing gas, air or liquid, and refrigeration plants. The following are exempted: 1. Steam or hot-water boilers used for domestic purposes or used solely for heating purposes (carrying a steam pressure not exceeding 15 psig or a water pressure not exceeding 30 psig). 2013 National Board Synopsis of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Laws, Rules and Regulations
181 2. Steam boilers on railway locomotives or any steam boiler subject to jurisdiction of the Board of Transport Commissioners of Canada. 3. Marine steam boilers. 4. Pressure vessels having internal or external pressure of 15 psig or less and having inside diameter of 6 inches or less. 5. Pressure vessels located on locomotives and vehicles used for carrying passengers or freight. 6. Pressure vessels used for containing flammable liquids or gases at temperatures over 300°F. 7. Pressure vessels containing only water under pressure for domestic supply including those containing air, the pressure of which serves only as a cushion, or in air lift systems. 8. Refrigeration plants having a capacity of 3 tons or less refrigeration in 24 hours. ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING. InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD 1. Boilers: one annual inspection, alternating internal/external each year. 2. Pressure vessels: periodic frequency of inspection determined by chief inspector. InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS 1. Inspections made annually by authorized inspectors employed by insurance companies registered in the province may be accepted in lieu of inspections made by a department inspector. 2. Written report of all inspections or letters to insured must be filed with the department as soon as practical after inspection (includes completed data on each boiler). 3. Department must be notified of suspension of insurance on account of dangerous conditions. 4. Department must be notified of new business and discontinuance of insurance.
