Construction:<br />

1. ASME Code (2004 Edition), Sections I, II, III (Division 1), IV, V, VIII (Division 1) (only as applied to compressed air receivers<br />

<strong>and</strong> vessels holding liquids <strong>and</strong>/or gases for refrigerants), IX, X, XI.<br />

2. ASME CSD-1, Part CW (1977 Edition).<br />

3. <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Inspection Code (2004 Edition).<br />

4. Special design or construction requires approval by the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>Rules</strong>.<br />

5. Chapter 142, Sections 17, 18 <strong>and</strong> 19 <strong>of</strong> the General <strong>Laws</strong>, relates to the marketing, construction <strong>and</strong> installation <strong>of</strong> hotwater<br />

tanks <strong>and</strong> hot-water heaters. This comes under the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the plumbing inspection departments <strong>of</strong> the<br />

city or town in which the units are to be installed. Construction shall comply with the ASME <strong>Boiler</strong> <strong>and</strong> Pressure Vessel<br />

Code.<br />

Stamping:<br />

Where appropriate, the following <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> stamps or ASME Code symbol stamps are required:<br />

1. <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong>: NR, R, VR.<br />

2. ASME Code: H, M, N, NA, NPT, NV, PP, S, U, UM.<br />

ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr InSpeCtIOn anD StampInG<br />

1. All boilers, refrigeration <strong>and</strong> air conditioning systems, except when under the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the federal goverment.<br />

2. All heating boilers operating at 15 psi or less steam pressure, or 160 psi <strong>and</strong>/or 250°F water pressure <strong>and</strong> temperature,<br />

except when:<br />

a. Having less than 4 square feet grate surface;<br />

b. Having a steam capacity less than 104 pounds per hour;<br />

c. Used as a hot-water heating boiler with an output capacity less than 200,000 BTU per hour;<br />

d. Used as a hot-water (or other liquid) supply boiler, having a heat input less than 200,000 BTU per hour, a water (or<br />

other liquid) temperature less than 200°F or a nominal water-containing capacity less than 120 gallons.<br />
