Construction:
1. ASME Code (2004 Edition), Sections I, II, III (Division 1), IV, V, VIII (Division 1) (only as applied to compressed air receivers
and vessels holding liquids and/or gases for refrigerants), IX, X, XI.
2. ASME CSD-1, Part CW (1977 Edition).
3. National Board Inspection Code (2004 Edition).
4. Special design or construction requires approval by the Board of Boiler Rules.
5. Chapter 142, Sections 17, 18 and 19 of the General Laws, relates to the marketing, construction and installation of hotwater
tanks and hot-water heaters. This comes under the jurisdiction of the plumbing inspection departments of the
city or town in which the units are to be installed. Construction shall comply with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code.
Stamping:
Where appropriate, the following National Board stamps or ASME Code symbol stamps are required:
1. National Board: NR, R, VR.
2. ASME Code: H, M, N, NA, NPT, NV, PP, S, U, UM.

1. All boilers, refrigeration and air conditioning systems, except when under the jurisdiction of the federal goverment.
2. All heating boilers operating at 15 psi or less steam pressure, or 160 psi and/or 250°F water pressure and temperature,
except when:
a. Having less than 4 square feet grate surface;
b. Having a steam capacity less than 104 pounds per hour;
c. Used as a hot-water heating boiler with an output capacity less than 200,000 BTU per hour;
d. Used as a hot-water (or other liquid) supply boiler, having a heat input less than 200,000 BTU per hour, a water (or
other liquid) temperature less than 200°F or a nominal water-containing capacity less than 120 gallons.
