ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr COnStrUCtIOn anD StampInG<br />

All boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels, except the following:<br />

1. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels under federal control.<br />

2. Domestic water heaters designed for heating potable water, equipped with approved pressure-relieving device, containing<br />

only water <strong>and</strong> not exceeding:<br />

a. Capacity <strong>of</strong> 120 gallons;<br />

b. Water temperature <strong>of</strong> 210°F;<br />

c. Pressure <strong>of</strong> 150 psig;<br />

d. Heat input <strong>of</strong> 200,000 BTU per hour.<br />

3. Pressure vessels containing liquified petroleum gas under the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the state fire marshal. (Exception: <strong>The</strong> construction<br />

<strong>and</strong> repair <strong>of</strong> such vessels shall be in compliance with the boiler law.)<br />

4. Air tanks used in the operation <strong>of</strong> brakes on self-propelled vehicles <strong>and</strong> trailers used for transportation <strong>of</strong> freight or<br />

passengers.<br />

5. Medical sterilizers not exceeding 1-1/2 cubic feet in volume.<br />

6. Pressure vessels not exceeding 5 cubic feet in volume which are not operated at gage pressure <strong>of</strong> more than 150 psi,<br />

equipped with a relief valve, approved under ASME Code, adopted by the board <strong>and</strong> set at a maximum pressure <strong>of</strong> 150<br />

psi.<br />

7. <strong>The</strong> following boilers <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels are exempt from Oregon <strong>Boiler</strong> Law, except provisions relating to construction,<br />

installation, inspection, <strong>and</strong> fees:<br />

a. <strong>Boiler</strong>s operated at less than 15 psig located on farms <strong>and</strong> used solely for agricultural purposes, except when used<br />

in connection with a greenhouse.<br />

b. Air tanks located on farms used solely for agricultural purposes.<br />

c. <strong>Boiler</strong>s or pressure vessels used in a single private residence shall have an installation inspection <strong>and</strong> be provided<br />

with a permit to operate, but shall be exempt from subsequent inspection required in the boiler law, except<br />

changes or repairs made.<br />

d. Pressure vessels operated at less than 15 psig.<br />

e. Certain miniature boilers (see 918-225-365 <strong>of</strong> the Oregon Administrative <strong>Rules</strong>).<br />

Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING.<br />

InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />

Each boiler <strong>and</strong> pressure vessel used or proposed to be used within the state, except as exempted under ORS 480.510 to<br />

480.665 or by administrative rule, shall be thoroughly inspected as to its construction, installation, operation, <strong>and</strong> condition as<br />

follows:<br />

Pressure vessels containing anhydrous ammonia intended for use as a fertilizer — 3 Years<br />

Pressure vessels: Fixed, containing only air, not located at a place <strong>of</strong> public<br />

assembly, less than 20 cubic feet in volume, operated at 200 psig or less<br />

— 6 Years<br />

Steam <strong>and</strong> hot-water nonboiler external piping<br />

*Both under pressure <strong>and</strong> not under pressure.<br />

Inspected upon installation<br />

Hydrostatic test when deemed necessary to determine the safety <strong>of</strong> a boiler or pressure vessel shall be made by the owner/user <strong>and</strong> witnessed<br />

by a deputy or special inspector.<br />
