4. Low-pressure boilers shall be inspected as follows:<br />

a. Steam or vapor boilers shall receive an external inspection annually <strong>and</strong> an internal inspection biennially where<br />

construction permits. Under certain conditions with the chief inspector’s approval, steam or vapor boilers which<br />

have internal continuous water treatment may be subject to an annual external inspection while in operation <strong>and</strong><br />

an internal inspection quadrennially;<br />

b. Pool heaters, spa heaters, hot water heating boilers <strong>and</strong> hot water supply boilers shall receive an external inspection<br />

annually, <strong>and</strong>, where construction permits, an internal inspection every four years from the date <strong>of</strong> manufacturer’s<br />

completion.<br />

c. Effective August 30, 2009, all newly installed water heaters stamped with the ASME “HLW” Code symbol stamp<br />

shall be inspected externally at least every 24 months <strong>and</strong>, where construction permits, these units shall receive an<br />

internal inspection at the inspector’s discretion but not to exceed every six (6) years from the date <strong>of</strong> manufacturer’s<br />

completion.<br />

d. All water heaters installed prior to August 30, 2009, shall be inspected externally annually <strong>and</strong>, where construction<br />

permits, internally every five years from the date <strong>of</strong> manufacturer’s completion. <strong>The</strong>se existing water heaters may<br />

be places on the inspection frequency noted in (4.c) above upon written request by the Commissioned Inspector<br />

responsible for the inservice inspection <strong>of</strong> the item. This request shall be made on the Inspection Report submitted<br />

for renewal <strong>of</strong> the Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection for the object.<br />

5. Unfired pressure vessels:<br />

a. Unless excepted, unfired pressure vessels subject to internal corrosion shall be inspected internally <strong>and</strong> externally<br />

biennially;<br />

b. Unless excepted, pressure vessels not subject to corrosion shall receive an external inspection biennially;<br />

c. Unless excepted, pressure vessels subject to internal corrosion or which contain hazardous or lethal fluids shall<br />

receive an internal inspection biennially where construction permits. Pressure vessels not subject to internal corrosion<br />

shall be inspected internally, where construction permits, quinquennially (every five years);<br />

d. Unfired pressure vessels under the supervision <strong>of</strong> an owner/user inspection organization shall be inspected at intervals<br />

required by the Nebraska Administrative Code <strong>and</strong> the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> Inspection Code, or API-510, as applicable.<br />

InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />

1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies are accepted in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by a department<br />

inspector.<br />

2. Reports <strong>of</strong> external <strong>and</strong>/or internal inspections must be filed with the department on state-approved forms within 14<br />

days after inspection.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> a dangerous condition.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> new business <strong>and</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance.<br />

5. Insurance companies are required to inspect to the degree required by the <strong>Boiler</strong> Inspection Act.<br />

CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn<br />

Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection, valid for 12 months for boilers <strong>and</strong> 24 months for water heaters <strong>and</strong> pressure vessels, are issued by the<br />

department upon payment <strong>of</strong> the required fees by the owner/user. <strong>The</strong> Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection fees for boilers <strong>and</strong> water heaters<br />

are $3.00/month, <strong>and</strong> for pressure vessels $1.50 per month.<br />

<strong>Boiler</strong>s, high-temperature water boilers, low-pressure steam boilers, hot-water heating <strong>and</strong> supply boilers, <strong>and</strong> hot-water heaters:<br />

1. Internal certificate inspections:<br />

a. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 800,000 BTU per hour rated capacity or less ................................................................................................ $25.00<br />

b. <strong>Boiler</strong>s over 800,000 BTU per hour rated capacity <strong>and</strong> less than 1,600,000 BTU per hour rated capacity .......$45.00<br />

c. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 1,600,000 BTU per hour rated capacity or more, <strong>and</strong><br />

less than 3,200,000 BTU per hour rated capacity ............................................................................................................ $90.00<br />

d. <strong>Boiler</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 3,200,000 BTU per hour rated capacity or more, <strong>and</strong><br />

less than 8,000,000 BTU per hour rated capacity ..........................................................................................................$130.00<br />
